Why is it making a loud clicking noise?

If it makes a loud clicking noise on startup or shutdown, it could be caused by a weakness in the springs that hold the compressor in place in the hermetically sealed shell.

If it is a constant noise while compressor is running it could be a slightly bent fan blade hitting its surroundings. Check the condenser and evaporator fans.

The air conditioner makes a loud sound when the ac trys to kick in. When i put it under fan it works fine and makes no noise.

Sounds like your compressor is seized/stuck and the unit needs a new compressor. If this is the case it should make a loud buzzing noise for a while and then click when it stops trying.

Air conditioner fan is making a loud noise

1. Could be a caught foreign object between A/C (air conditioning) fan and cooling radiator, producing this loud noise.
2. Could be a damaged fan blade, mowing the cooling radiator.
3. Could be a loud noise comming from the fan's electrical motor.
4. Could be a broken off fin (small wing) of the cooling radiator, striking the A/C fan, producing this loud noise.

Loud Knocking

If the noise is not coming from the fan as Buffalo suggests, it is most likely the expansion and contraction of the heat exchanger. The old school way to lessen the noise of expansion is to bank the combustion chamber with a hammer. I don't recommend it today because the metal is so thin (thus all the noise) and you may damage it. You will get used to it and the noise may soften the more it is used. You will never get it to stop.
