Try this, I have the same problem and I just got off the phone with Taylor, this is what they told me to do and my scale is now working again.
1. take the battery out.
2. put the scale on a flat, hard surface
3. stand on the scale for 10 seconds
4. put the battery back in, be careful not to touch any buttons or turn the scale on
5. put the scale back on the flat, hard surface
6. put one foot on the scale and apply pressure until the display comes on
7. take your foot off of the scale
8. wait for the the display to go blank
9. now stand on the scale to weigh yourself.
This worked for me. Hope that it works for all of you.

My scale had the same problem. I replaced the battery, but still got the same message. My wife noticed that one of the feet on the bottom of the scale was loose. The feet are twisted on to the scale and held by two small flanges. When I gently pulled the loose foot away I noticed that a small black wire had broke. I used my fingernails to remove a small bit of the wiring cover and twisted the ends back together. I then hide the wires back in a recessed area on the foot and placed it back on the scale. Worked just like the day I got it. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem with the error message coming up and emailed Tanita. The regional representative contacted me by email. He had me check with new batteries and clean the contacts. Then he cross-referenced my model and lot numbers and said that my scale was still under warranty and if it met the warranty criteria would be replaced. Tanita has a 10 year warranty on this scale and my scale was 5 years old. He gave me an RMA# to submit with my receipt and about 10 days later I had my replacement scale!! Fantastic Customer Service! Thank you Tanita!!!
