Need make and model and operating system. Have you tried "Start from last known configuration that worked" Have you tried a system restore? Turn off computer and restart. Keep pressing F8 until the option screen appears and then try starting from last known configuration. Let me know.

First run disganostics on the system and see if you get a failure code. (Fn +Power Button on Dells) of from the F12 menu, or Boot to Resource CD. If those pass, boot to a windows XP CD, press R to enter Recovery Console, and run the COMMAND CHKDSK /R then see if the system will boot to windows. If that fails, you'll like need to reinstall Windows

Try clicking on "Start computer from last known configuration that worked" INSTEAD OF "Safe Mode". If that doesn't work, follow Dageezer's instructions or take it to a computer repair shop. I would still try Restore if you can get to a screen that will let you do it. remember to use a date BEFORE you had the problem.

My computer says its restarting but it hasn't and it wont shut off

Hello, if the Windows operating system, then wait as the operating system upgrades.
tip

How do I know if my laptop is overheating.

Hi.

Overheating may ocurr if the air vent intakes are obstructed, or when the cooling system is defective.

A typical symptom is the computer shutting down suddenly and turning off completely for no reason.

To start you need to ensure that the laptop is not turning off becauseof a system problem.Sudden shut down can be caused by differentsoftware and hardware problems. There are several ways to check thisout.

You can for example start the laptop using a boot disk, or starting aWindows setup disk, and then leaving the system on for one or twohours. If the system does not turn off after starting from disk, thenthe problem is not overheating.

If for example you decide to use a Windows setup disk to do the test, proceed in the following way:

  • Start the system with the Windows disk inside.
  • Choose to "start system from CD" when asked.
  • Do not choose to install or repair Windows, just start the system and leave it hanging on for some times.
  • Ensure that the computer does not go on standby in the meanwhile.

Another way to check if the problem is overheating is by using a software like SpeedFan to monitor the system temperatures.
That would be a better way to check if the system is overheating, as it can give you precise indications on system temperature.
If the system starts and stays on long enoug to install and then to start SpeedFan, then install the software and turn it on. If temperature before shut down is near to critical value, then the problem is overheating.

This last method can be used only if the system stays on long enough to start Windows and run the software.

If the problem is overheating , that means that the heatsink fan mustbe replaced, before overheating ends up damaging CPU or motherboard.

This tip apply to both laptops and desktop PCs.

My laptop shuts down for no reason

  • Hi, from my experience, when a Computer shut-down, as the way you discribed; the main area of concern is the "Fan." The Computer is overheating; to make sure that there is not any permanent damage done to the "Computer Components, the computer will "Shut-Down." Now back to the Fan, more than likely the "Fan"just need to be cleaned. If you can get access to the Fan area to apply a "Air Blower" to clean out the "Dust," the computer should work fine. If by some reason this is not the case. There may have been a change in the "Configuration of the OS." The safest thing to do is a "System Restore," setting the Computer back to a [Time] when it was working properly. The {System Restore} can be perform by going to the "Control Panel," open the program; and follow all the instructions carefully!" Be very patient, it can take awhile. Do not use,or touch any "keys" once the System Restore started, even after the Computer restart" its still running! Wait until the message appear; that the [system restore is complete]." "Let me know how tyhings work out, by giving a "helpful rating, and thanks for using Fix'Ya"

Dell Inspiron 1545. When booting to vista the screen goes black. When booting to safe mode the screen works normally.

Please reinstall the Video Driver and check if the same issue persists. If the issue started within last 90 days, you can try the System Restore

Vaio computer problem

You could have a faulty fan and/or dust clogging the fan and heat-sink assemble. This is the most likely cause of the laptop shutting down. When the CPU overheats it goes into thermal shutdown and if this problem is not fixed, eventually the CPU will fail.
Check the fan to see it it spins freely and check if the fan works when the laptop is powered up.
If the fan and heat-sink is ok, then to give the laptop addition cooling then purchase a laptop cooling pad and place the laptop in this pad (These pads have cooling fans and helps cool the laptop).

Computer shutting down randomly in the middle of everything...even offline games

This can be the result of a virus infection or an infection of other malicious software such as spyware.

Run a thorough system scan.

If this doesn;t help, tell me and we'll go to the next thing to check/do for this kind of problem.
