I turned my TV on and subtitles were automatically on. How do I get rid of the subtitles?

One of the kids has turned on the subtitles and now we can't turn them off.
we have the normal five channels tuned in on 1 to 5 and the cable box tuned in on 6 , channels 1 to 5 are ok but on channel 6 the subtitles are on through the cable box and we can't turn them off. Is is the TV or the cable box, and how do we turn them off.
