SOURCE: zoom problem
Ive seen this three times and everytime its been something differant. Fist was the rocker switch was jammed. easy fix as dirt was in there. Second was a small serface maounted capacitor in the zoom interface circuit. An third never found the problem as we thought it was a limit switch in the lens itself but the customer never paid for a new lens assy so we didnt order it. Good luck

SOURCE: Zoom control not working
Sounds like the zoom control needs cleaning I run two of these and they have both gone within a week of each other, it seems to be a common fault. Will need to send them to a repairer as they are fiddly to do.

SOURCE: automatically zooming in
Those who suggest hitting the camera right where the zoom button is are correct, oddly enough. I cant explain it, but it worked in a real jam. Maybe not a good long-term solution, when you need things to work. But in the short-term, it really saved me from big problems.
I just removed the battery and cassette, then slapped lightly the camera on the offending area.
It may be useful to note that my "remove cassette" message was also accompanied by a zooming in, which could only be stopped by pressing the zoom button to one side.
Thanks to the person who recommended the hitting method.

I own an HF100 and i had the same zoom issue. I purchased a replacement zoom key assembly directly from canon (phone 732-521-7230 cost is about 25 dollars), and installed it myself. This has fixed the issue for me, and i am very glad i didnt have to pay to have it serviced. You can buy the part yourself and install it if you feel confident in your ability to disassemble/reassemble the camera correctly, or shop around for a local camera shop that can swap it out for you.
