Turn the #1 cylinder to top dead center, on the compression stroke. Remove the cap and see where the rotor button is pointed. This is the #1 cylinder plug wire position. Start from here, and clockwise run 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

I mixed the distributor cables up,so i need the order to correctly connect

If the wires are still in the distributer, AND, if you have a stock intake manifold, the firing order is on the manifold. If it's a V-8, the number 1, 3, 5, & 7 plugs are on the drivers side of the engine. The number 2, 4, 6, & 8 plugs are on the passenger side. The number 1 plug wire can be located by looking at the distributer from the front of the engine and visually looking between the distributer and the number 1 plug. Visualize the distributer as a clock. The number one position should be located between 4 and 5 o'clock and should have the longest wire of those on that side of the distributer.

If the wires have been pulled from the distributer, then, then, remove the rotor cap, turn the engine over slowly until the rotor is pointing to the number 1 plug. Using the firing order on the intake manifold, starting with number 1, replace the wires going clockwise around the distributer.

Rough idle and accelleration in my 89 GMC truck with a 350 TBI

Try a new distributer cap and rotor button, these are notorious for wearing out the carbon pick-ups and leaving carbon tracks in the cap which messes up the fireing order. If that does'nt fix it try plugs and wires.

We replaced the distributor cap and rotor on our Dodge Ram Van 1500, but one wire popped off as we were working and we aren't sure they are in the right order anymore. How do we find a diagram to help us...

the firing order is usually stamped on the engine itself. Take off the distributer cap and turn the ignition to see which direction the rotor is turning.

The distributer cap has the number 1 plug marked . After finding the firing order, place the wires 1 where the cap is marked then in the direction the rotor is turning (ie:clockwise or couterclockwise). Keep looking . Most every motor I have seen has the firing order maked right on the engine.Or the owners manual ?

I have a 1990 dodge dakota. I need to know where #1 is on the distributer cap. I know the firing orders , though i have no markings on the cap as to where #1 starts.

You can rotate the engine until #1 piston is at top dead center when it has the rotor on the distributer will point at the #1 on the cap.

Wire hookup to distributer cap.

Wires just pull out of the top of the cap. Do them one at a time and you won't have a problem putting them back.(they just push into each hole.)
