SOURCE: WD 1TB My Passport Essential is unusable.

This error comes up when the drive is formated by a different operating system, and yours can not read it. You will need to format it to be read by your current system, but you will lose any data on it. The only other option is to find out what it was formated for, Windows or MAC, and hooking it up to that computer.
With a Windows system, once you hook it up, open explorer (not internet explorer). You will see that drive on the right side, right click on it and choose the format option. Once it has been formated, you will be able to use it.

Wd passport not recognised after transferring files to another hard drive

I think the hard drive has failed to initialize for mac os .The best suggestion is connect the drive with some other Mac PC and start recovering the drive with the help of a good recovery tool .To recover failed hard drive mac i used this tool.It is so quick than the other and recovered almost all of my drive completely. It also recovers data from a partitioned mac hard drive completely.first try the demo if good results reached go for the full version as i did ..

Somehow my WD Passport became a generic volume and I cannot have access to it with the message I/O device error. What should I do?

Get a new one: the I/O error happens when the control board of the hard drive is dead and this cannot be repaired.

Western Digital removable HD devise not found

For Western Digital Passport make sure you use the prigina;l USB cable or a replacement. They are not all the same. WD uses a propriatary cable with an extra power line I believe.
