Try retreading the machine. The order is usually in the manual. It may be that the lower and upper looper are threaded out of order.

You may have the bobbin case in wrong.  I have this machine, and I know that it is really easy to put the bobbin case in wrong.  Try taking it out and making sure that the little stop is in the front and it is seated down in there and able to wiggle back and forth.  My experience with this machine, until the other day when my cat knocked mine off the table and knocked something out of alignment, is that it just works.  Any time mine hasn't worked, it has either been dirty, needing oil, threaded wrong or the bobbin case wasn't seated right.  In other words, it has always been my fault.

machine needs to be timed,,usually a 30-50 repair, could try dropping a needle just a tad bit to see if it catches

SOURCE: The bobbin thread is not

try a new needle
make sure the bobbin is not warped
make sure the bobbin case area is free of lint or loose thread
make sure you hold the upper thread tail while it's going down to pick up the bobbin thread
make sure there is a 2 to 4 in tail for the upper thread to grab

My machine is new and worked briefly but now . . . . the machine is threaded correctly and the bobbin is placed correctly. When turning the knob for the initial pick up of the bobbin thread, it does not...

You have described your problem just fine. Have you just changed the needle in your machine? If so, check it is in the right way, you want the flat shank to the back.

The needle has a scarf (scoop out) at the back - if it is facing to the front then the rotary hook (bit that goes around the bobbin and catches the top thread) can't catch the needle thread behind the needle.

Also check needle is fully up into the housing, this could also cause problem.

I'd suggest that you visit www.sewingabout.com and check out the pages on general sewing machine use, care and threading up, lots of helpful pictures and information which may be of assistance to you.

If it isn't your needle backwards (very easy to get wrong, happens all the time), then the timing could be out, which isn't so easy, but as its new I'd be very suprised if this was the fault. Just check needle, make sure top and bottom threads are threaded correctly and have another go. Also, remember to turn flywheel towards you.

Bernina 2500DCET serger keeps breaking the centre needle thread for no apparent reason .Already had machine serviced, new needle plate didn't solve anything either. Any ideas

I have found with any serger I have used that you have to cut the looper (bottom) threads before re threading the needle threads. You then rethread the loopers.
If you don't do this, the needle threads keep breaking. Hope this helps.

2000ats - not serging

Make sure the tension disks are clean and not binding.. You can use a piece of yarn dampened with alcohol and floss the disks.

Threading order is:
1) Upper Looper first
2) Lower Looper
3) Right Needle -- exception: if you are doing 3 thread using left needle only
4) Left Needle

The machine was threaded incorrectly at first, but after changing the needle I was threading it correctly. The problem ended up being the needle depth. When I inserted the new needle, I did not have pushed up into it's slot quite far enough. I pushed it up all the way and retightened the screw. Now it is serging like a dream!
