The mic element has probably gone bad. You can verify this with a multimeter, measuring between pins 1 and 2 you should see either infinity or 50-400 ohms depending on the element. If you get open circuit that is confirmation the mic element is bad.

Maybe Sound Card problem. Vista always has sound card problem because It works through your sound card.
