It could be that air is leaking in through the gland around the needle. You could try putting a drop of oil on the needle where it enters the front part of the body, and tightening the packing nut just a touch

Spray is pulsing

this is usually caused by:

1. water in pressure tank of the compressor - clean the compressor holding tank
2. faulty valve in direct drive compressor (rare!)
3. dirty needle/gasket in the piece.
4. insufficient air flow

regarding 1:
stop the compressor,
open drain on separator and let all liquid out
allow pressure to drop to atmospheric
open drain valve on the tank and drain the content
on the compressor body find oil drain and drain oil
fill with new oil according to instruction on your compressor
close drain valve on the tank and separator
start compressor and check if problem is solved

re 2:
return valve is too difficult to change without specific model knowledge

re 3:
fill 1/3 (pint/500ml or less container)gun container with paint stripper and spray it directly to the sink or other container on full blast - WEAR SAFETY MASK, GOGGLES AND GLOVES! STRIPPER WILL BURN YOUR SKIN!
fill same level with water or solvent and run again, this operation should remove most of residual paints in nozzles and pipes.
check now nozzle for cleanliness and needle assembly, clean what necessary, use bit of vaseline when you will put it back together.
check for consistency of spray on piece of butcher paper with your usual paint. if problem solved - you are fine!

re4;
increase air flow... this actually should be done first.

for better instruction - please provide with model of the gun and paint used.

your comment and rating will be appreciated.

In trying to spray oil base paint, I get very low fluid flow (if any) from the cup to the gun. I've cleaned the gun and insured the hoses weren't clogged. Changing the adjustment valves...

How does it spray if you dump the paint out and put paint thinner in the cup? If it sprays paint thinnner, but not the paint, your paint is too thick. Thin it down by 25% and try a little. Keep adding thinner until the paint sprays out of the gun in an acceptable manner. Your gun probably has a 1.1,or 1.4 fluid tip. this is for spraying lacquers or automotive paints that are very thin. to spray oil based paint, your would need a 2.0 or 2.5 or bigger. not really what this gun was made to spray.

Why does my gun keep spitting

Spitting is usually caused by not filtering the paint through a strainer (made for the purpose by the paint manufacturer). The paint debris blocks the paint for just a moment, then spits it out. Easy fix!

Problem spray painting water based paint

I spoke to a friend who was a spraypainter in his last job, apparently due to the thickness of the paint, I needed a larger nozzle on the gun. I couldnt get a nozzle to suit this gun so I purchased another gun with a cuple of different size nozzles. All seems to be working fine now.
