I am the same problem. CX5400 does not recognize new cartridge after being replaced.
There are two type of cartridges for cx 73 and 91 and now they introduced 91n and 73n. if your old color cartridges are 91 and now you inserted 91n black it wont be accept it. you have to change all the four cartridge same model.
Maybe the cartridge you buy is not same brand of your printer,, or try to remove printer driver using the ad and remove program, uninstall completely the driver and install gain
SOURCE: Epson CX5400
Nothing wrong with the printer. The rubbish cartridge you bought and replace it with one that works. Approx 30% of most compatible/refilled cartridges DO NOT WORK.
Not only that but they WILL block your print head nozzles eventually. Ever wonder why Epson do NOT make any flushing cartridges but almost every compatible "maker" does??
99% sure the cart is at fault. return it to where you bought it and get a swap.
