Question about Porter Cable BSV750W 7500 Watt Electric Generator

Open Question

I have a Porter Cable bsv750-w-2 Gen-set. No elect. output except 2 volts on the 120v outlets and 4 v on the 240v outlet. I replaced the capacitor but after starting it still produses the same volts. I checked the capacitor with an ohm meter and I get nothing. I might have been sold a defective one or when I started the gen. It went bad. Not sure. How do I check the field/stator windings for open?? Also I dont believe it has an AVR. What about the Rectifier?? Need help here...Thank you...

SOURCE: Porter Cable Generator does not produce electricity

Here are a a few possibilities to look at:

1) Bad connection at the outlets themselves (loose wire) regarding neutral, hot wires.

2) Bad Excitation Capacitor. The Exc. Cap. is responsible for energizing the field wiring of the alternator. If the field is not energized, there will not be a magnetic field developed, therefore, no electrical output.

3) Open Field / Stator winding. If Field winding is open, no magnetic field will be developed. If Stator winding is open, no voltage will be induced.

4) Generator speed is too slow. If the RPMs of the engine are too slow, the output of the alternator will fail as well. Note that from normal speed, voltage output will occur but at reducing frequency until ouput ceases altogether, usually at about 47Hz. If your alternator is a 2 pole, engine speed should be 3600 rpm nominal. If alternator is a 4 pole (most aren't), engine speed would need to be about 1800 rpm nominal.

5) Generator speed too fast. If RPMs are too fast, output may fail as well. See above.

6) Excitation Fuse has blown. There is sometimes a fuse in the excitation circuit. To check this, you will likely need to pull the end housing off the alternator. Pay attention to bearings / bushings.

Coleman Powermate 6250/500 PM0545005 has power to just one side of the 120/240 outlet. the 120 volt outlets have none. Ran just fine onr week ago

The capacitor has no bearing as you have output on one leg. Take or have an electrician check the power from L1 to N and L2 to N right as it comes off the generator stator, before any breakers and receptacles. If you have no power still on one leg, the stator is bad. The rotor is fine as you indicate you have power on one leg, you may have lost one set of windings in sthe stator. Good Luck

Porter cable the compressor regulator is always at 0, the tank is at 150psi but no air at the outlets

Always at zero, like the regulator is broken?

I would assume that you never set it to whatever
pressure you want to use

I bought this dryer and we need to switch out the plug becuase it doesnt fit the outlet can we do this?

If this is a US dryer, the device requires 240 volts and two phase to work, switching the plug to 120V single phase the dryer won't work. If you don't have the outlet you need an electrician to fit a suitable outlet.

Generator was running just fine. it's a bsv5500-w overloaded the unit by mistake. tested with meter and found 86 volts. shut unit down and now only puts out 5 volts on each leg

are you sure the breaker didnt trip when overloaded,as this is what the breaker is for and would explain the ghost voltage of only 5 volts at the outlet

On the outlets it has 4/120volts outlets and 1/120-240volts outlet. Can you use the 120/240 outlet as a reg 120volt? And what is the reason of the 120/240 outlet. Thank you

The reason for the 120/240 volt outlet is to be able to run things like large electric heaters or even your clothes dryer as they all require 240 volts. If you use it as 240 volts you will not have maximum current output on your other outlets so you wouldn't be able to plug anything really big in. And yes you can only use is as a 120V output if you would like but you will need a special attachment or extension cord. I'm going to leave you with two reference pages I looked up that you should have a look at.

No electricity from generator

If you have a voltmeter, you can check the voltage coming out of the outlet. If you have some kind of residual voltage, such as 25 Volts AC or 10 volts ac, then you probably have a voltage regulator problem and your regulator will need to be replaced. If you read 0 volts then you you have an open between the output (outlet) and the windings of the stator.

Coleman 1850 sport, no/ low generator output

Hi,
The engine should run at 3750 rpm at no load. If that's OK then you may need to troubleshoot the capacitor inside the end of the generator opposite the rope. Since the thing has been stored for some time you may just need to flash the field of the generator to restore the residual magnetism in the rotor. The easiest way to do this is thru the 110 outlet but it's a little dangerous. Plug an old lamp cord into the outlet, start the generator, and momentarily connect a 9 volt dry cell to the wires, then shut the generator down and see if there is 110 when you restart it.
Regards,
Carl
