Fuel filter like any other filter should be changed on a regular basis which varys on different cars, but the owners manual should list all scheduled maintenance and the milage it should be performed at. If you are over due to change it then by all means it is a logical place to start. It is important that yu stay up on both fuel and air filters to maintane gas milage and power.

Have a 1994 grand prix and is running very rich and runs fine driving but when you let off the gas pedal to slow down it stalls

I would have someone check my fuel filter. It may be clogged. It works when you push on the gas peddle because you are increasing the gas pressure that forces its way pass the clogged portion of the filter. The fuel filter is the cheapest place to start troubleshooting this problem. They should be replaced periodically. Check with auto parts for length of time you can go between fuel filter changes. Hope this helps, Good luck.

My van is stalling when i come to a stop. was told it maybe the fuel filter is this true

You own the vehicle & should know how long
the gas filter has been in there

I suggest replacing it every 3 years, you can go longer
if you choose & have a plastic fuel tank & no issues

Cut one open when you change it & see how it looks

If you can drive it with no issues for the most part, then
---NO-- it isn't the gas filter

A totally clogged filter is unlikely & you would only
have a problem getting up to & past 40 mph

As was suggested, check for codes, even without
a dash light on
Need professional scanner for that ,not something
free at parts store

If you have an Idle Air Control Valve near the throttle,
clean that

Keeps stalling out

If it starts fine and idles fine but then stalls or doesn't have power when you juice it, it sounds like a fuel problem. It is unlikely a carb issue if it gets regular use and as long as its not sitting for long periods of time. I would first check the fuel filter. If that's fine, then I would check the vent hole on the gas cap (if you have one). If it is a gravity-fed fuel system and the vent hole on the gas cap is clogged with dirt, dust, and debris, then the gas will not flow to the carb fast enough and you'll get a very lean mixture. Sure, it will idle fine because the engine isn't demanding much fuel at idle, but when you open up the throttle it will stall because the air:fuel ratio will be too high (symptomatic of a lean mixture) Last thought: Dirty air filter Let me know if this helps

This is because the engine exhaust cycle creates a vacuum which siphons fuel from the gas tank to the carbs- and if the vent hole is clogged the fuel wont flow. Car stalled when i was driving

A car that stalls while driving usually has to main issues. Either it isn't getting fuel, or it isn't getting a spark.

In order to help better diagnose this issue, post the conditions in which it is occurring. ( i.e. weather, road conditions, fuel levels, any recent car issues, etc.)

BAD FUEL PUMP CHECK FOR FUEL PRESSURE WHEN ENGINE DIES AGAIN,IF YOU GET ZERO FUEL PRESSURE FUEL PUMP COULD BE BAD, I WOULD REPLACE FUEL PUMP RELAY FIRST BEFORE BUYING NEW FUEL PUMP.IF FUEL OKAY YOU COULD HAVE CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS OR WATER IN FUEL, FUEL COULD BE CONTAMINATED. I HAVE SEEN A FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CAUSE ENGINE TO STALL OUT.

Hello
Your running out of gas.
the fuel filter needs replaced.
your fuel filter is clogged and isn't letting a full flow of gasoline through.
change your fuel filter.

Also check to make sure your gas tank vent isn't clogged.
a clogged gas tank vent with pull a vacuum and try to **** your tank in, but it can't, so your fuel flow stops if it can't breathe.

That should take care of your problem.
have a great weekend

Not getting fuel to the carby, have checked float bowl(empty) have taken fuel line off and turned engine over but no fuel comes through. Fuel tank is full

On your Swift, there's probably a fuel filter located just off the gas tank that's somewhat hard to spot. It also takes a bit of finesse to get a wrench in position to change the filter, and so this part is often not changed out until it's completely plugged. I would suggest changing this filter to see if this makes any difference. However, even a plugged filter normally allows a bit of gasoline to dribble through.

A second possibility is that your fuel pump isn't working properly. I don't have my reference materials in front of me, but I believe that this car is equipped with an electric pump, as opposed to a mechanical pump on the engine. If your fuel pump isn't working, you won't get fuel delivery through the lines to your engine. Also, the fuel pump may have failed from having to work extra-hard to compensate for a partially or wholly blocked fuel filter (see above).

I would trouble-shoot both these items; I suspect that one or both of them are contributing to your fuel problem. I have seen a number of Swifts / Metros sold "as-is" or sent to the junk yard for running poorly when their only problem is a clogged fuel filter.
