Not getting gas - wont start

The primer bulb has a hose that goes to what I believe is a float bowl, primer bulb is good and hose is good. However when I prime, I hear air and that bowl does not have any gas in it. I tested the spark plug and it works, when I put gas in the spark plug, it fires. just cranks otherwise.

SOURCE: 5 hp tecumseh mower. plug is firing. carburator

Check the flywheel key. It is the most common problem I have found when a Tecumseh either wont fire or backfires. When you have the flywheel uncovered, take a nut the same thread as the flywheel. Remove the one from your machine and use the other one for the next operation. Take the new nut, place it on the sshaft in place of the one that was there. Lift the flywheel with one hand (to get a strain on it) and with the other hand, rap the nut with either a wood mallot or a regular hammer. You may have to rap it sharply. The flywheel will come loose and you can see the problem. Go to a small engine repair shop and get a new flywheel key. Install it and go about your cutting. Good luck...Lee

SOURCE: Murray Walk behind mower, Model # 20705X6M 5.5

Clean ALL the very small holes in the brass bolt that holds the carb bowl on.Some are VERY small and easily clogged. With bowl off and the bowl float hanging free, does gas readily flow? It should, and it should of course stop when the float is raised (putting the needle valve on its seat). If this event is occuring, then the main jet must be badly clogged. If no gas even gets into the bow. (not enough details).. then there is a vacuum lock or something strange going on in the fuel tank (cap). The threads of the fuel cap on a mower allow it to vent, preventing vacuum lock of the fuel flow.Start at the tank and go back in. Please repost as this is a good one.

I share your frustration. We just had our first snow fall of the season and my Troy Bilt Squall 2100 would not start or do anything. The snow blower is well maintained and does not have 2 hours use. I use 0-30 synthetic oil and installed fresh gasoline. It is simply maddening to have plunked down close to $500.00 and have a useless snow blower. Trying to get through to Troy Bilt's help line is next to impossible.

Toro lawnmower Wiil not start

Remove carb float bowl. Clean bowl. Observe float bowl screw, look for hole thru bolt, if present use thin wire to clean out. Float should be hanging freely and gas should be flowing, raise float gas should stop. Pinch off gas line or use shut off valve. Remove pin from float, remove float and needle meter. Use thin wire to clean out passage were meter needle is inserted, wire should pass thru to behind choke. Replace float & meter needle. Replace float bowl. Pull rope half way several times. Inspect primer bulb for cracks or leak. Try to start, may take 5 or more pulls to prime.

I have a 22 inch self propelled recycler that will idle for hours, but as soon as you engage the self propel and start mowing it stops after 5 minutes.

This sounds like fuel starvation. This is usually caused by debris in the fuel float bowl or a dirty fuel filter (if used). Remove the fuel float bowl and clean out the debris. With the bowl removed use a spray paint can lid as a catch pan and check fuel flow. With the float down it should fill the spray paint can lid in about 10 seconds. If you do not have this much fuel flow you need to inspect the tank outlet port, fuel lines and filter (if used).
The 20029 & 20099 models came with either a Briggs & Stratton or Kohler Courage XT7 engine. I need to know what engine you have to provide any diagrams on what to check or clean. A n engine model number would be even better. (Please!) Since the post is labeled with the 20099 model I will cite that as a reference. This SERVICE manual should help you with repairs:
http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp2601_308.pdf

See page 27 of the manual for fuel filter location. (Optional if used) AN exploded view is on page 31.

If you have the primer bulb model see page 24 and note the ondition of the primer bulb and primer bulb hose. Any hole in the primer bulb or cracks in the primer bulb hose can also cause this symptom.

If you have the Briggs and Stratton engine (Model 20029) I need the engine number to get you the correct manual data please. Otherwise...this should help you resolve the problem.

Somebody gave me a Craftsman lawnmower with a B&S 7 HP motor, YBSXS.1901VE 275078, because he couldn't get it started. I put gas in and it ran out of the primer bulb so I replaced the primer bulb. Now...

under the carb is a metal bowl. This bowl houses the carbs float attached to a needle valve. This valve is probably stuck open due to corrosion or dirt blocking the opening. You can remove the bowl with a half inch wrench and lower the bowl from the carb. Let some gas flow out of the needle valve and work the float up and down to help clear out the obstruction.

Push up on the float and see if the fuel flow stops. If it does you can put the bowl back on and see if it stops flowing out the primer bulb.

If it is still flooding you probably need to replace the float, and needle and needle seat. These are pretty inexpensive you can order them online *(ebay might even have them!).

You might want to clean the main jet too. You should get this carbs diagram to show you where the main is located.

I have a Sears craftsman lawn mower that will not stay running. The model # in the engine is 12h887-2314-E1. Can you give any suggestion?

Your engine parts list can be found here: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/docsearch.aspx?enginelookfor=12h887-2314-E1

There are 3 different carb variations on this unit.

Primer type
Choke type
Auto-choke type?

On the Primer type with the plunger on the side of the carb the primer bulb gets a pin hole in it that allows air to be drawn through the primer bulb. So the engine will start an then die after priming.

On the Choke type carb debris in the bottom of the float bowl AND bowl nut will cause this.

On the Auto Choke type there is a diaphram under the carb that can get damaged and allow airflow where there should be fuel flow.

I am pretty sure that your mower has the float bowl on it. remove the bowl nut... take some carb cleaner and spray directly up into the hole the bowl nut screws into and clean it. Then also spray around the float needle.

If your still having problems.. just fro grins remove the fuel supply line to the carb and check for fuel flow. If there is little or no flow either the fuel slector is off or the fuel tank outlet has debris covering the tank outlet hole inside the gas tank.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Starts but wont keep running

The fuel bowl has a float and needle, the bowl is filled with gas and over time the float gets filled with gas or just don't float as it should within the bowl. the needle is pulled up by the float which lets fuel flow into the carb. A repair kit can be bought for $5 and is easily replaced. After you take this apart, it's a good idea to clean the carb with a carb cleaner. You'll have to take off quiet a bit which looks difficult but it's really not.

Lets back up and regroup on the carb work:

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
This is how to clean the fuel passages in the carb.
Here is what you need to do:

1. Fuel selector off
2. Remove float bowl mounting screws and nut
3. Remove the BRASS Jet / Orifice in the very bottom of the venturi tube inside the pickup tube. (Flat blade screwdriver) Hold the Orifice up to the light. You should see a pinhole. If it is not clear clean the orifice but do not force anything through the hole.
4. Underneath the Orifice there is yet another BRASS tube that you need to remove. (Flat blade screwdriver) Make sure all of the holes in the tube are clear. The tube will be over 2 inches long. Clean it and reinstall it.
5. Reinstall the Orifice.
6. Using a catch fuel container turn on the fuel selector. Fuel should flow at a good rate. GENTLY lift the float assy level and make sure fuel flow shuts off. When you drop the float again fuel should flow.
If you do not have fuel flow at this point the needle and seat will need to be inspected. Fuel selector OFF.
(The following procedure is to be done only if there is no fuel flow with fuel selector on.)
a. Remove the silver float pivot pin retaining screw
b. Drop the Float down (The needle will come off with the float. NOTE the position)
c. Inspect the tapered rubber of the needle If should be pointed. If it is not pointed then the rubber tip is stuck inside the seat.
d. Clean the seat hole ONLY if obstructed. (Easily damaged)
e. FUEL Selector on then off fuel should rapidly flow through the needle seat.
f. Renistall Float and needle making sure to get the pivot / hinge pin installed correctly and reinstall the silver retaining screw.
g. Fuel selector ON. Raise and lower float checking for free movement and fuel flow.

7. If there still is no fuel flow at this point remove the fuel hose from the carb and check fuel flow. If no flow check that gas tank exit hole, fuel filter (if installed) and the selector valve assy for obstructions. Reassemble connections.

FUEL FLOW IS GOOD

8. BEFORE you install the float bowl inspect the bowl nut. There are 2 holes in the side of the nut where it screws in to the bottom of the carb that must be clear.

9. Install Float bowl mounting screws and nut. Check for leaks.

10. Test engine.

That should do it. (carb cleaning 101)

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly
P.S. If it still does not start and you have a primer bulb on the carb the primer bulb most likely has a hole in it. Press and hold the primer bulb CLOSED against the carb inner mating surfaces and see if it will start. (2 people required) If it starts and runs the primer bulb has a pin hole in it.

the engine is not getting enough gas. when you hold down the primer you are bypassing this problem. to fix this simply adjust the carb's fuel screw, located on the side of carb, a little at a time until runs smoothly.

1 Answer

Gas leaking in a stream from other end of primer line

Something is causing the float in the carb to stick in a downward position. This float tells the carb when to cut off the flow, and stuck down it keeps the channel open for gas to flow through. Empty the gas and remove and thoroughly clean out the carb, making sure you hit the float bowl very well. Worst case the float could be bad. If cleaning it thoroughly doesn't get it, consider a carb rebuild kit from the engine manufacturer or replacing the carb.
