SOURCE: how do i replace the surface element for a glass

The cook top on this model range will lift up, exposing the surface burners and wiring harness. The screws are located along the bottom of the front edge of the cooktop. You will need to open the oven door to see them. Then, just follow these steps:

Before you begin:

1. UNPLUG the range before servicing. There is dangerous voltage still present even with burners turned off.

2. There are a few screws located under the front edge of the cook top. You will need to open the oven door to see them. Remove these screws and the top should lift up. If the range is not equipped with any kind of hinge supports, the top will have to be propped up.

On some ranges, there is a disconnect plug for the surface element wiring harness. If you have this feature, Follow these steps:

a. Unplug the cook top and leave the elements in place.

b. Place the whole cook top assembly face-down on a soft surface (like some old towels, or a blanket).

c. Remove the bad surface element by removing only the bracket pair that the affected element is attached to. Leave the rest of the elements wired together. Write down the wire color codes so you can be sure the new element is installed correctly. HINT: A digital camera can save you some time.

d. When installing the new surface element, make sure you use the same alignment marks (the numbered positions around the perimeter) as the old element. Avoid touching the burner surface and handle with care. Try to handle from the underside of the element only. Oil from your hands can cause damage to the element and/or premature failure. The elements are fragile.

If the wiring harness does NOT unplug, prop the cook top in place and install the surface element from underneath. A helpful hint: Use some duct tape to hold the assembly until you have screwed it back into place. Don't forget to remove the duct tape when completed.

If you have any questions about this repair, please let me know. You can reference searspartdirect.com for some helpful exploded view diagrams of you range for assistance if you need it. I hope you find this information helpful.

SOURCE: I have an old whirlpool electric range model

I was looking at your wiring diagram. A red wire goes to a limit and then enters into a terminal box and feeds L-2 power to both element. I would be looking real close at that limit. It has a orange wire on one side and a red wire o the other terminal and most of these here limits look a lot like this one.
I am gonna try and link ya to the diagram but I doubt WP will allow it. Mighty funny both ements in the oven have took a dump. I suspect that limit. Next I will try and find a part number for that limit and maybe we can see that puppy. Hang on. Looks like it could be NUMBER 8
now let see how much that puppy costs and hopefully what she looks like. Hang on. $40 bucks
Dang that seems to me like a lot. Notice they don't post a pic either. Know why? Because they know yall can get generic ones by looking at the stamped metal temp numbers on the part. A klixon is a klixon. This ques is makin me curious to bust open my parts catalog and see what come up with.

Broken Glass on Cooktop

Ouch. The glass top does have to be replaced but I just ran the partial model number on your range and if you're at the comp. I hope you are sitting down. Replacing it not bad. Purchasing tho is rediculous. Retail suggested price just for the top is 600.00. Rediculous pricing but GE is like that sometimes. Sorry but repairing the glass is not possible and getting it from a glass shop isn't either. Sorry for the not so good news. Rick

The oven will not light on my Whirlpool gas oven Mod SF368LEPQ 2. The stove top burners still light.

Sounds like you need an bake element ignitor if the bake doesn't work but if the broil also doesn't work, it could be the electronic clock/timer control. the part number for the bake ignitor is 8054129 .Best off to call a reliable service company such as Sears.

I have a four year old Fridedaire glass top stove that has suddenly stopped getting hot. Not the oven or any of the burners. The light is still on inside and the clock is working but nothing will heat up.

barring an issue with your erc, you may want to check that you have 220 at the plug
most of your functions work on one leg of the 220
usually including the top elements, but if you happen to be wired backwards this could be your issue

Check the element connections for good tight connections in both connectors. If ok, swap the element with one of the same size working elements and see if the swapped element works. If it does, replace the element. If it doesn't, the control switch or switch connections are the problem.

Gemini Range Dual Burner

Unfortunately, you cannot repair one element of a dual burner. It all comes as one unit. When one portion of a dual or triple element goes bad, you must replace the whole element. I believe the part number is 1032746 and runs about $70. You will have to lift the glass top to access the burner elements. If you decide to pursue this on your own follow these steps: 1. Unplug range and/or turn off main breaker. 2. Open oven door to access screws under front edge of cooktop. Remove two screws and the top should tilt up. 3. The top will not stay up on it's own, so you will need some assistance holding it up. Some ranges have a couple of disconnect plugs that you can unplug, so you remove the entire top and lay it somewhere to work on. If this is the case with yours (as I suspect it is), lay some soft towels down on the kitchen table or counter top and lay the cooktop upside down. This will make it much easier to work on. 4. Remove affected element by disconnecting the wires first. You may want to write down how they came off, so you can be sure to reconnect them in the right order. 5. Remove mounting brackets holding element in place. Pay particular attention to the numbering scheme on the bottom of the element and where the brackets are mounted. The new element usually doesn't come with new brackets which means you have to take the brackets off the old element and put them on the new element. Make sure you install them in the same numbered holes as they were located before. 6. Reconnect wires and reinstall cooktop, making sure you reconnect the disconnect plugs if equipped. Now, be careful when working on the cooktop while it is upside down. Make sure you don't apply too much pressure on the glass or you could crack it. Also, use extreme care NOT to touch the element surface as the oils from you hands can cause hot spots and effectively ruin it. The bake light material in which the element is mounted is also very fragile. DO NOT put to much pressure on it or it may crack and break. Once you get the cooktop reinstalled and power reapplied, op test it to make sure BOTH elements are working. It is normal to see a little bit of sparking at first with new elements and/or an odor. Test the entire range of the element and make sure it regulates like it should. I hope this helps you.
