Question about Nokia C201 Cell Phone
1.Bad SIM -if it wasn't unlocked you'd get a message asking you to enter a PIN.Get the pin from an online vendor like http://www.theunlockarena.com/nokia-c2-01/rs13wp9/ .
2.With a warning that you have 10 attempts to enter the correct PIN code or it could be locked forever ,if you don't get that message it's "mostly likely" unlocked.BUT find a phone with a known working SIM and see if it will work and connect to the network.
3.May be a hardware problem try flashing with a custom rom.
4..This has to be a problem with the SIM card slot, which is soldered down to the logic board. It's possible that it's a mechanical problem , you might be able to open it up and discover that the card-detect switch is failing to detect SIM card insertion.
5.The os system has been updated and your phone is not being recognized with the right settings , this happened after a update a year or two ago..

Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

SOURCE: sim card reg failed in my 6630
confirm that your phone is not locked to a particular network carrier especially if you desire to change sim card operator.
if this were so, you will need to unlock your handset first before re-inserting your sim card into your handset.
third way out is to flash your phone.

Factory resetting the phone will do absolutely nothing with this problem
There are 3 causes of Sim Card Registration Failed, when you first turn on the phone, the sim card attempts to connect to the network if it can not do this it gives a message like Sim Card Registration failed.
1, The sim card is turned off (is it Orange) if you have had the sim card for a while and it hasnt been used they will turn it off, you need to contact them from another phone to get it turned on or get a new sim card.
2, The phone has a hardware reception problem, when it attempts to register itself with the network it can not... There is a reception problem and it requires repairs, this isnt really an easy diy job on this handset.
3, The phone is blocked, i.e reported lost or stolen. Some networks when a phone is reported will allow it to get reception but will not let it make calls, however other networks will not give it reception at all and hence you get a Sim Card Registration failed message.
I hope this helps, these are the causes of the message.

The first thing to try is put the SIM into another handset - if you get the same error message on that, the SIM is blocked. If it works in another phone, the most likely explanation is that the IMEI of your phone has been blocked by the network.
