Open Question

Behringer GMX1200H amp very quiet clean sound and weak sounding distortion

Lent it to a friend of a friend for about 4 months so he could do some recording on his laptop or pc. Got it back and I cant get a good distortion sound out of the amp even with a distortion pedal. What could of happened? and how to possibly fix?

I to thought it might of been a problem with some internal hardwear, maybe from been left on without something in the input and been burnt out. However, I found the issue to be much more of a novice mistake. The problem was the 9v battery been flat after not been used for months on my guitar with active pickups -_- Thankyou guys for your input, I'm just glad I figured it out before I sent it in to a shop to get it looked at

Also, I thought it might of been what Fred said with the problem been something that was possibly done via computer input, cheers anyway for the sugestions!

SOURCE: if the master output

Does the distortion ALSO appear when you listen with headphones? If not, the problem may be downstream. The driver for the mute control line to the mute transistors may have a problem. Make sure the mute is off.

SOURCE: I have the Behringer Eurorack

It sounds like one of the output devices is going bad, ie., output transistor, capacitor, resistor or maybe just a bad connection on one of the above menitoned items. One other problem which causes this would be the main or sub volume slider or pot is wearing out and needs to be replaced. It would definately be worth your while to have a technician trace down and fix the problem on this board. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a B215D Behringer

This should be close to your schematic;

Scroll down to "Get Msnusl" link and download. Leaving it on should NOT have caused a failure, however, if it was running and the input was not being driven there may have been feedback going on that did damage. Only thing to do is take it for repair.

SOURCE: I own a Behringer Ultratone

This is most LIKELY an electronic problem... possibly in the final power amp. Repair may be a simple failed component or a mass number that fail like a stack of dominos. Take it to a shop for repair.

I had this Amp for almost 4 years now, and suddenly got a problem a month ago. When I'm using it from clean sound it suddenly auto switch to distortion sound and vice - versa .

Normally that would be caused by a dirty footswitch jack or a broken (intermittant) cable on the footswitch itself. If neither of these is the problem, it will be a relay in the amp and will have to go in for service. Here's a link

Is it the guitar or the amp

Hi, Sounds like you have a bad cable to your amp. Try swapping out the cable. If that is not the problem, The pickup maybe bad.
Hope that helps.

Not functioning..

I would check it with a different instrument cable AND bass guitar. If you end up with the same results, it's a thermal issue with the amp and will require factory authorized repair. The amp heats up and the intermittent component starts failing....more heat, more failure. It's not an easy fix and your Behringer repair shop will have their work cut out for them with this repair.

Sound is distorted at certain frequency / volume what would cause this?

More infornation is required to provide a real answer, but I can give you a few possibilities:

1) There is a problem within the feedback loop that is allowing some frequencies through. This will be more prevelant at higher volume levels.

2) If there is a tube pre-amp section, the tube can be "microphonic". This too is generally more likely at higher volume levels.

3) Defective components in the amp section. These may pass some DC voltages that will sound like distortion.

If you can, please experiment a little to try to find when the problem is most obvious. With more details about when the problem occurs may give us enough info to determine the cause. Otherwise a trip to a service shop that has access to test equipment will be required.

Mixer does not sound "clean"; almost distorted

If more than one input is bad, then problem has NOTHING to do with the preamps. Check list:
1. Make sure you are using BALANCED lines everywhere... either XLR or TRS cables.

2. Make sure ALL interconnected equipment, mixers, amps, powered speakers, CD players, etc. are ALL powered from the SAME receptacle or power distribution unit.

3. Do proper setup. Select each channel PFL and set the trims so the indicator never goes into clipping, but is in the 70% range during max volume input to mics, etc..

4. During operation the sliders should be at least 50% up on used channels and the mains. Setting of levels throughout the system is important for noise free operation. Using EXCESS gain at some point results in distortion and noise. Using sliders near the bottom position results in poor signal to noise ratio.

Now re-read #2 above... and believe it. I have seen a lot of equipment blown due to ground bounce of building power. That is why the pro's run power back to their mixer from the area where the amps are powered.
