Hi, apart from the engine oil level not showing on the dip stick, the oil pressure switch wire may not be making full contact on the terminals, or cable damaged or even not on the switch, are there any other read outs or warning lights on, are all fuses good, are there any oil leaks from the engine, if you are not sure do get a qualified technician to help.P

Engine warning light on dash

Possible that the oil pressure is low , the oil level is low or the oil pressure switch has failed.
Check level of oil, check for pressure of the oil to the sensor -swap and test and finally check for error codes to confirm the case.

2005-low oil pressurer explore

I'm assuming you have a low oil pressure indicator on the dash. Have you checked the oil level? If it is at correct level, it is possible the oil pressure sender/switch isn't reading the pressure properly. Also it is possible that bearings in the engine are worn out, or that the oil pump isn't working properly. If you don't have a pressure gauge to screw into the engine where the switch is, I would start by replacing the oil pressure switch.

Whats the purpose of an oil pressure switch can it determine weather oil leaks from your grand prix or not?

The oil pressure switch or sending unit is a unit that receives an electrical signal showing what your cars oil pressure is.And yes it does partially does let you know when there is a problem somewhere in the oil system. For example if your filter gets clogged up your oil pressure will go down and then go up when you accelerate. If there was a leak in the system first you would probably see the leak And if the oil pump or oil pump shaft were to break you would have no oil pressure. So you can see the importance of having an oil pressure switch.I feel there are 2 guages that are important to watch are your oil guage and water temp guage they can tell you allot about how your car is operating.

91plymoth voyeger the check gages light goes on and the oil preser gage gose down at a stop light only when in drive or revers

Hello Johnny.
At idle in gear is when your engine is running at it's slowest. The oil pump is also running slower.
As engine parts wear the oil escapes past these wear points reducing the available amount of oil flow.
This in turn reduces the oil pressure.
It is possible that the oil pressure sending switch is defective as well. But you should get the oil pressure tested on a manual gauge to verify. This is done by unthreading the oil pressure switch and installing a manual oil pressure tester with an accurate readout.
If you are hearing ticking noises the upper moving parts in the engine may not be getting proper oil pressure.

I hope your repair is an easy one.

Car low on oil and motor wont start. It cranks over but wont start. No oil lights have come on on dash board so had no idea it was low on oil;

Some cars, not sure about yours had a switch on the fuel pump, if the oil was low, they wouldn't start. Get the oil back up the re and see what happens. The oil sending switch must be for pressure and not level, it will register 60 lbs pressure with only 1 qt of oil in there, try it, hope it helps.

Car start up puts then cuts off as if its not

The fuel pump relay is at fault. Upon starting the engine the fuel pump is feed by the engines oil pressure switch. Once the engines oil pressure is reached to operating pressure the computer shuts off the voltage from the oil pressure switch and turns on the fuel pump relay intill you shut the engine off.
The oil pressure switch has three wires to it. Two are for the oil pressure sinals sent to your dash. The third one is for the fuel pump. It may sound confusing although this system is used by nearly all manufacturers of vehicles

Low oil pressure readout and engine runs rough it is a 740 IL 1995 I dont know what models below are 740 IL

Hi it could just be the oil pressure switch get that checked first.

Is the car putting out any smoke? if so then it may be the head gasket starting to go, leaking oil into the pots. give it a hard rev and check, also the valve stem oil seals could be going. this would cause the engine to run rough if the spark plugs are getting oil on them. remove each plug and check for deposits of oil or very dark carbon

there is a few possibilities but your better checking these first.
if no joy get back to me

Try a new oil pressure switch first,if that does'nt repair the problem then get the oil pressure tested. If it tests low then the problem is internal and the motor meeds to be dissasembled.

Engine oil light is showing on the dash board after switching on

Most important thing you need to do is to establish the actual oil pressure. put a mechanical gauge on the engine and read real oil pressure. If pressure is low (min is 15psi, I prefer to see at least 20 at idle) there is an internal problem...bearings etc. If pressure is good, sending unit has failed...replace it. I would not drive it 'till the oil pressure is verified as being safe. You might get lucky and someone just forgot to plug in the sending unit, but it must be checked!!!
good luck

Audi 80 oil pressure light

i think from memory that the oil pressure switch is at the back of the cylinder head, if its not there it will be located just above the oil filter, these switches are very cheep to buy and can be bought from any good motor factors. You are right to suspect the switch, its the first thing to eliminate before bogging your self down with more complicated and expensive problems.
