In all honesty Hard drives do not have any passwords. Maybe you need to re-declre ownership of the contents inside the disk to gain access to the files.

Mac os X: highlight the drive and press +i to "get info" the last patch of settings on the window is permissions add yourself to the permissions of your maxtor drive with read/write/access and apply to all enclosed items. close the window. eject the drive, re-connect and get your files.
