SOURCE: Toaster Loading handle wont staY down

I have researched this toaster quite extensively, without any success as to actual solutions. Usually these machines have either a solenoid activated lever that holds the toast down, although magnetic systems are not uncommon. These may be avtivated by a thermostat, an optical "brownness" meter or a timer. Usually the cost of replacing this would be as much as a new toaster due to labour costs, however it may possibly be fixable - could you add a photo of the internal workings - this might help. Unfortunately many other purchasers appear to have similar problems and claim to have had little success with either dealer or manufacturer. The number of toasters of this model offered for sale second-hand as new at ridiculously low prices makes me suspect that there is a fundamental problem with the model. Use any warranty you have, but unless you wish to write a lot of letters/mails then i suspect a new toaster might be your best bet. Availability of spares for this toaster is another issue - I have been unable to find anyone who claims to supply these, although individual components are almost certainly from different manufacturers and could be sourced. If you can arrange a photo of the toaster when open (reasonably close up and general view) then I may be able to help more. Apologies for no actual "Solution" yet.

SOURCE: toaster arms will not stay down

Arms stay down by the mean of an electromagnet, controlled by a chip. If the wall outlet is functional, you should be able to turn on light by pressing the "defrost" or "bagel" button while the arm is held down. No light? the toaster is good for garbage!!

SOURCE: Russell Hobbs RH2T toaster bread won't stay down w/o hold handle

Hi, most new toaster have a selenoid that hold down the handle while toasting then release when done so a spring bring the toast up. Possible problem with the selenoid, the electronic circuit that controls it or the plate that the selenoid holds. When you lower the handle you close the contacts of the AC line inside the toaster so if the handle is raised there is no power.

Fix sunbeam 3806 toaster that won't stay down and therefore heat bread.

Just a guess since I have had the same happen to my Proctor Sillex - When you push down the lever, you are actually completing the transformer frame that then magnetically keeps the toast down until it's setting lets the toaster pop up.
In my case, a piece of toast was wedged and I could not get the handle down so that the hardware was in place to magnetically hold. Have you tried to give your toaster a good thorough shaking upside down, unplugged over the garbage can or the sink?
Good luck Eric

GE toaster model 169100. : the lever to toast won't stay down. I researched removing the base to clean the magnets, but not regular Phillips screws. Suggestions??

I have the same GE toaster and now my lever won\'t lock in place when I push it down to cook my toast. The handle does not pull off and when you turn the toaster over there are no screws to take the toaster apart. So I guess I have to say this is a disposable toaster but I am extremely bummed because it is beautiful and match decor and microwave that has the same color scheme as my toaster.

I wish companies would stop making cheap junk that doesn\'t last more then a few years.

Toaster latch does not stay down on Cusinart CPT-120 compact two slice toaster

for Cuisinart cpt160: If the latch will not stay down it is because the electromagnet at the base of the toaster, which is supposed to activate when you push the handle down, is burnt out. I pulled my toaster apart and did a test of that mechanism and found that the solenoid was fried (open circuit). There are no replacement parts.

Our toaster stopped working a little while ago, but it is outside the (presumably) one year warranty period. It's a 4 slice, soft touch black toaster, cost about £75, I think it is this model. It only...

remove from the electricity supply
remove crumb tray,
remove bottom 4 os 6 screws.
at the bottom of the toaster there is what liooks like a flat fish hook that engages with the handle when you push the handle down to start toasting. clean around this and try to get it to engage when you push the handle down, it wont stay down unless the electricity is connected but dont plug it in as you will probably kill your self!!
put it back together abd try it
if it does not work 4 slice toaster from Tesco £9.99

Toast won't stay down when handle pushed down handle comes up immediately as if not plugged in. Plug definitely in. Used only 3 times.

take it back. sounds like the magnetic coil that holds the handle down when it is plugged in is not functioning.

Toaster does not stay held down to toast wct 708

there is a "contact switch" that when there is power in the system, it stays down. If hte contact switch is bad, it releases and will not stay down. COntact switch needs to be replaced, unfortuantely I have the same problem and can't seem to get the part.

This is a problem, our old toaster had this problem, and it would only work if we jammed the handle down, but don't try this, only because ours broke after we tried this, but if you can send it to the manufacturure, they should be able to fix this. If you don't what to do this, please phone me at 505 9181, but please call me from 8:00-10:00, 2:30-8:00.
