I have an older Guardian forced air heater. I can cross the red/white wires and it will run for 10 minutes then shut off and not start again. Is there a safety cut off in the furnace?

make sure you filter is clean and your blower works, a blocked filter will shut off system on high limit, and it will reset when furnace cools off

The unit will turn on and run fine for a few minutes then shut off. It won't immediately turn back on, almost as if it hans to cool back down first. Any ideas i have a lennox furnace

The ignitor will light, the blower will start up and run for a few minutes and then the system will shut down, and the blower will continue to run and cool down. The ignitor is not working properly, the ignitor has carbon build-up and need to be removed, cleaned all the black carbon from the ignitor with a little piece of sand paper and replaced, turn the heat back on and this should correct the problem.

Heater runs for appox 2-4 minutes and then shuts down..

what kind of furnace do you have? Is it electronic or standing pilot? If you have electronic then it could be flame sensor if you have standing pilot and the pilot goes out and you have to relight then it is probably the thermocouple what is going through an 1/2 flex pipe explain this a little more. Have you checked filter.

Heater runs hot for a few minutes then stops heating

I would say from what you have described your problem is a bad thermostat heat sensor (you may have to replace the whole thermostat on this model!) This is a very common problem for this unit!
