Question about Marantz CD5001 CD Player

1 Answer

Hi _ I have a Marantz CD player a littl;e over 6 years old. Performed perfectly until today, when it started inserting brief gaps in the music, approx 1-2 seconds; at the same time the track / time display goes blank. Then the music & the display pops back. Not skipping forward or back so far, just the silent gaps. I know the problem is in the player, not the discs, since the gaps occur at different points during multiple plays. I have an AudioSource CD laser cleaner CD, but I don't think the Marantz will read it. The unit displays 'TOC reading' and then having found none, does not spin the disc. I may have to take the unit in, but can anyobne recommend a laser cleaning CD that the Marantz can handle? - thanks

Laser cleaning cd's very rarely work. the only thing they are good for is if there is a build-up of dust on the lens. Sounds like you most likely need to have the laser replaced.

All players need cleaned from time totime. Do NOT try to clean it with anything other than a CD / DVD lens cleaner. They are available almost everywhere that sellsBlank media. It will clean the lens without scratching or smearing it.

these models use the 12.1 philips laser mechanism and it is a very common problem for failing to read discs.
various technics / marantz / philips / cyrus cd players etc also use it and are plagued with the same fault.
it's a 90% chance the laser is dead!
philips realised the unreliability of this laser and uprated it to the identical looking VAM-12.
do not dismiss the spindle motor as these also fail quite alot on this mechanism.

hope this helps.

SOURCE: Marantz CD48 - CD spins backwards

Check the small signal transistors BC338 and BC328, they're under the transport mech and will be near where the spindle motor plugs in to the PCB.
One of the transistors acts as a brake which momentarily puts the motor in reverse polarity to stop the CD rotating during 'stop' or 'open tray' modes. The reason the CD is spinning backwards is that the transistor which drives the spindle motor forwards during playback is faulty and is triggering the braking transistor hence spinning backwards.
The transistors should be 'BC328-25' / 'BC338-25' (25v)
Replace these and all should be well.

Hope this helps

DR-6000 only accepts CD-R audio or CD-R music discs, not the standard CD-R discs. the difference is that the audio and music discs have the OPC formatted differently and they cost a bit more because they include the royalties fee. Standard CD-R discs won't work in this recorder. The correct discs have compact disc "digital audio" logo on them.

Sony Music CD-R's available at Target (purple packaging not red - must be music not data). I had been using the TDK's from Costco until I started having issues similar to yours. Sony's work perfect - no issues ever.

I've owned one for years, and yes... depending on how many discs you burn, you may need a new tray. You can call Marantz and they will ship one to you. They will also send you a diagram of how to replace it. Pretty simple.

I have had this problem twice now in ten years, each time took it to get repaired at a marantz dealer and they replaced the laser. First time was about $150, second time they didn't charge me. No problems otherwise - which for an integrated item like this, where so many things can go wrong, is pretty good.

No Sound Through Speakers

Hi Jake,

If you haven't done so already, I'd try double checking the speaker wiring, you may have some exposed or badly kinked wires behind the unit.
