Laptop not reading the full drive

My acer laptop will only read about 35GB out of the 80GB it is listed at. It does not have any jumper on the 4 pin area where one can slide on a jumper. Is this the problem. Regards Terry

I have fixed my problem ( by accident ) I reloaded win Vista from disk, which wiped out all my files ( which I wanted to do anyway )The HD was partitioned into 3 sections Small one i think is part of boot up ( not sure & don't care !! ) I then found that I could delete the "D" drive so I did that. Next I had to update the system as the disk was a few years old. After about 112 downloads I then found the "d" drive was back in existence, but needed formatting, when this was done I then had a total size of around 75 GB. Where as before ( for a number of years ) the total was 35GB with the "c" drive 90% filled Vista. A couple of comments that came in reply, about the jumper, ( which I thought was the main problem ) The web site information said that no jumper was the default set up. That's to all with their suggestions. Terry

Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop won't recognize full 320 Gigabytes of new PATA hard drive. It's always been running a 80 Gigabyte 4200 RPM but that drive is old...a 2005 HD. New WD320 only reads 137...

The BIOS in the ACER determines the maximum size of the hard drive it can support.
Check the laptop's specification to see the max size you can install in this model laptop.
It appears that the max size your laptop can support is 140 Gb (unformatted). 137Gb formatted.

I suggest you install a hard drive up to 140 Gb capacity in your laptop and place the 320 Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and when you attach this hard drive to the USB port in your ACER laptop then you will be able to get the full 320 Gb capacity after you delete the partition and create a 320 Gb partition and format the hard drive.

I have a 250gb seagate sata but when i put my 80gb IDE hdd it only detects in booting and in bios but after that if i open my computer i cant see my 80gb IDE Hdd and even in device manager my hard disk was...

there was wrong in the set up of jumper in your 80gb hdd. Look closely to the 80gb harddrive, in between the ide cable terminal and the power supply connector you will see 8pin terminals paired together and a jumper use to short the paired terminals. It is most likely that the jumper was configure to detect your hdd as master. If the ide cable you use for the 80gb hdd was also use for the dvd/cdrom drive then it will conflict with it if both jumper setting was set to master. See the description of jumper settings in the sticker of the hdd. Position the jumper to slave.

Reboot your system again and see if the 80gb finally appear in your system. When system boot upon detection of hdd, the primary master should be 250gb while your primary/secondary slave will be read your 80gb hard disk.

My acer 3680 laptop wo't read a 4 gig hc sd card

Good day sir/maam, you may need a driver for your SD card reader for vista. pop in the cd that came with your notebook to the cd drive. make sure its for Vista.
If still does not work, plug in a non HC sd, like a 1 gig SD card. if it works, then the card reader only supports non hc SD. ( I know it usually supports HC cards ) check also for viruses. there are viruses that can dissable sd card readers. just make sure your laptop is virus free.

I have an Acer 5720 laptop with 80GB hard drive thats full.

To remove temp files and old compressed files run Disk Cleanup to free up disk space.
Click on My Computer then right click on the C drive and then Disk cleanup, if you have never done this before it will take a long time to complete. Then repeat this for the D drive.
Disk Cleanup and Defrag should be carried out approx. once every month to keep the computer operating at its best.
