Question about Kenmore 96212 / 96214 / 96219 Electric Kitchen Range

790.96414408 Stupidly a friend put aluminum foil on the bottom of my oven and it partly melted, anyway to clean this off.  I was going to use the self cleaning feature, but wasn't sure how much more the foil would melt.

I did that, too. Self cleaning won't help. You need to replace the bottom pan. Around $20 I think.

MELTED ALUMINUM FOIL ON BOTTOM OF OVEN FLOOR: Have a Kenmore ceramic smooth top range. We placed a piece of aluminum foil on the very bottom of the oven as we like to bake our pizza on the rack but...

I would try a copper scouring pad.
Aluminium is very soft - Mohs hardness of 2.75
Copper has a Mohs hardness of 3, just slightly harder.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardnesses_of_the_elements_(data_page)
Ceramic tile has a hardness of 7
Mohs Hardness Scale

This means the copper scouring pad should be able to remove the melted foil without scratching the ceramic - but test first to be sure.

With the older models of self-cleaning ovens one could put aluminum foil on the bottom tray of the oven, but with the newer models there is a warning (hidden in the last line) of your booklet for models of stoves where aluminum foil should 'not' be used! Even though print in small and many consumers are complaining regarding their stoves and melted aluminum stuck to the bottom tray of their oven (nothing will get it off) all manufacturer do 'not' cover this problem under warranty and thus, it will cost you $44 to buy a new tray. You unscrew the two screws to the bottom of the damaged tray of your oven and then install the new one and put back the screws. Letters of complaint should be written to the manufacturers to have them put this warning in clear bold print right on the front cover of the instruction brochure.

Aluminum foil melted to bottom of oven. how can I

If the foil is melted to the bottom, most oven liners are porcelain, so it will probably scrape off fairly easy. You want to try something non-metallic first. If you need to use something metallic to scrape it off be very careful not to scrape or chip the porcelain, you might try a scraper used to clean glass top cooktops. Remember porcelain is glass, so make sure you wear eye protection.

I have a Kenmore self cleaning oven with foil liner burned on!

Hi Leia, Unfortunately, the aluminum actually melted and adhered. The only perfect fix is to buy a new bottom piece for the oven, it costs about $30.00 and it is very easy to remove the old and install the new. Just a few screws.

You can get the part directly from sears by going to sears.com

Melted aluminum foil on bottom of oven

Steel wool is the best bet, but it would be easier to replace the floor panel. I had a customer do the same thing. depending on how bad it is replacement mat be a easier option, about $35 for the new panel, and about a month to get the part. two screws on the floor of the oven next to the back wall. The manual does say not to use foil on the oven floor.

Foil stuck to bottom of oven

A bit of chemistry first. Aluminum foil reacts to acid. A black substance referred to as aluminum salts is formed. This is simply wiped away. How quickly the foil is converted depends on the strength of the acid. Vinegar has a safe level of acid content. Within two hours, some aluminum salt should have formed. Wipe it away. Repeat. And keep repeating until all gone. Yes, the process takes time but you can be doing something else. And the salts are black, so you don't want your clothes or hands covered by the black. Expect this to take a long time. And you may get frustrated and decide to buy a new liner! But if you work at it long enough, it will remove the foil. You may be pickled by the end of the process but repetitions of this will remove the foil ... in good time ...with enough applications and wipings. And you haven't been exposed to fumes or effects of sodium hydroxide.

Melted Tin Foil in bottom of oven

Use "The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner" to dissolve the foil. *Caution* when the cleaner is applied to the foil a chemical reaction occurs releasing some harmful fumes so please use outside or in a well ventilated area. I just did this to a Frigidaire oven I bought from Lowes at a discounted price. The previous owners bought it, did not read the owners manual or just disregarded the warnings on using foil in the oven and thought they would line the bottom pan with foil to help make it easier to clean (Good idea, but don't try it on the hidden element ovens). With the heating element being hidden under the drip pan the heat is hot enough to melt the foil and fuse it to the pan. Now most of the pans on these ovens are removable by just a couple of screws and I strongly recommend removing the pan when doing this. Squirt some Works toilet bowl cleaner on it in a well ventilated area and watch it go to work. It took about 15 minutes for it to dissolve all the foil on my oven, then I rinsed it clean and reinstalled it in the oven. The pan does have a slight discoloration on it, not from the cleaner but from the foil being melted onto the pan, if you choose you can buff this out. Most of the modern ovens have the ceramic coated drip pans in them so the Works toilet bowl cleaner will not harm them, unless you have scratched the finish off. Works Toilet bowl cleaner contains a fair amount of hydrochloric acid which is what makes this work so well.
