You need to replace the magenta drum. Just because there is life left; it's possible it is scratched. Also, take a cotton ball dip in alcohol and wipe the LED's off when the cover is open; those black things that are hanging down from the cover. Also, make sure your drums are installed in the proper spots (magenta in magenta slot). If the toner "rubs off" after it prints... then the fuser is defective.

HL-5250 report shows fuser and laser life at 0% and PF kit 1 at 12%

The fuser is a separate component to the drum and toner in this printer. It has a much longer life than them but will run out eventually. Sadly a fuser unit is not a commercially available consumable for this printer either. I would recommend contatcing a printer technicain or Brother directly for a quote on replacing this part.

Can smears when priting be fixed

Have you tried cleaning the corona wire on the drum unit (the blue slider bit)?

Replace the drum unit (assuming you have already replaced the toner cart?)

To check the remaining drum life press the go button 3 times. A report should print out with the info on. Even though you may have some remaining life, the drum can fail early.

If the dots/marks are repeating about 3 times down the page it is almost certainly the drum unit that has the problem.

The mfc9440cn i have is continuly saying that the belt unit and the drum need to be changed even though they have both been changed recently. Is this a problem with the printer or the belt unit/drum?

You probably need to reset the counter on the parts life. Depending on the machine you have - you can do a parts life check - but it will always read 0 part life left, if you haven't reset the counter...
