The CS200 should automatically turn itself off. A copy of the manual can be found here: http://www.evanscycles.com/product_document/file/ea5/394/ec0/403/polar-cs200-computer-manual.pdf

I have a polar cs200. There is a visual display but nothing works while I ride. I replaced the battery but that didnt help. I put the computer next to the sensor but there is no response. Any suggestions....

The most likely problem is that the battery in the sensor that goes on your front fork needs to be replaced. The easiest way to tell if it that's the problem is to position the magnet on the wheel close to the sensor and then move it quickly back and forth a couple of inches. If you do not hear a clicking sound then your sensor battery is dead

Works erratically, am wondering if the contacts where the belt snaps together need to be cleaned, but I don't know how to clean them.

First up, are the batteries in the belt OK? That is usually the first thing to go on any Polar. Secondly, you're placing it in the right position, it's comfortably tight ( doesn't go lose as you breathe out ) and your head unit isn't right out on some Tri bars or something? Sometimes they don't like to send too far, and putting it back closer to the belt is the answer. A quick way to clean the contacts is with an old toothbrush and tooth paste, as this usually has mild abrasive in it. My bet is the battery in the belt is getting low, as it's a common problem.
