It can be many things can you be more specific please, no voltage on either leg of the 240V, zero voltage or a small amount

What is causing the battery to drain?


Running the car will drain the battery it if it's not charging ! An if your charging light is on it isn't charging ! Did you check power an grounds on the alternator ? There is a single heavier wire on the back of the alternator, this should have battery voltage ! You may want to take this to a ASE certified repair shop !
Functionality
With the ignition switch in the RUN position, voltage is applied through the warning indicator I circuit 904 (LG/RD) to the voltage regulator. This turns the regulator on, allowing current to flow from battery sense A circuit 35 (OG/LB) to the generator field coil. When the engine is started, the generator begins to generate alternating current (AC) which is internally converted to direct current (DC). This current is then supplied to the vehicle's electrical system through the output (B+) terminal of the generator.
Once the generator begins generating current, a voltage signal is taken from the generator stator and fed back to the regulator S circuit 4 (WH/BK). This voltage feedback signal (typically half the battery voltage) is used to turn off the warning indicator.
With the system functioning normally, the generator output current is determined by the voltage of the A circuit 35 (OG/LB). The A circuit 35 (OG/LB) voltage is compared to a set voltage internal to the regulator, and the regulator controls the generator field current to maintain the correct generator output.
The set voltage will vary with temperature and is typically higher in cold temperatures and lower in warm temperatures. This allows for better battery recharge in the winter and reduces the chance of overcharging in the summer.
Battery Positive Output (B+) Circuit 38 (BK/OG)
The generator output is supplied through the battery positive output (B+) terminal on the back of the generator to the battery and electrical system.
I Circuit 904 (LG/RD)
The I (ignition) circuit 904 (LG/RD) is used to turn on the voltage regulator. This circuit is powered up with the ignition switch in the RUN position. This circuit is also used to turn the charging system warning indicator on if there is a fault in the charging system operation.
A Circuit 35 (OG/LB)
The A (battery sense) circuit 35 (OG/LB) is used to sense battery voltage. This voltage is used by the regulator to determine generator output. This circuit is used to supply current to the generator field (rotor). The amount of current supplied to the rotor will determine generator output.
S Circuit 4 (WH/BK)
The S (stator) circuit 4 (WH/BK) is used to feed back a voltage signal from the generator to the regulator. This voltage is used by the regulator to turn off the charging system warning indicator. The S circuit is fed back externally on external mounted regulator generators.

  1. Check the operation of the charging system warning indicator lamp (instrument cluster). Normal operation is as follows:
    • With the ignition switch OFF, the charging system warning indicator should be OFF.
    • With the ignition switch in RUN and the engine off, the charging system warning indicator light should be on.
    • With the engine running, the charging system warning indicator light should be off.

  1. If the customer concern is verified after the initial inspection, refer to the Symptom Chart to determine which tests to carry out.
    • The charging system warning indicator is on with the engine running (the system voltage does not increase)
    • Circuitry.
    • Voltage regulator.
    • Generator.
    • GO to Pinpoint Test B .
    Your whole problem is the alternator is not charging , a couple tests with a volt meter would tell you !

Usually the cause of slightly low voltage like this is that the engine is not running at full operating RPM. Find the high speed adjusting screw on the govenor linkage and adjust the engine RPM until the output is 220V - 240V

High voltage rpm power generator output


Not sure what you mean "high voltage rpm power generator out", however many people have asked how to adjust the engine for proper voltage output. On generators with~out a voltage regulator, I adjust the engine RPM by using a digital voltage meter that has a Hz setting. Adjust the governor untill the meter displays 60 Hz. With the geneator producing 60 cycles, I know that the engine is turning 3600 rpm (the engine produces max hp when it is turning 3600 rpm). At this point, read the voltage output to verify that the range is between 115 ~ 120. On generators with a voltage regulator, verify/adjust that generator is producing 60 cycles then adjust voltage by turning screw at the regulator (some regulators are sealed with potting compound and can not be adjusted). If your power demands are not that great and you appliance can operate at 50 cycles, adjust governor as needed. Lowering to 50 cycles will also reduce output voltage. Good luck

AC voltage is 275vac on the powermate generator model # PM069250......engine speed is 3750 rpm (max is 3600 rpm)......how do i lower the speed and the 275vac to a nominal 240vac output.There is no expert...


On the engines carb. is a governor rod should connect to the front case of the engine. This rod should have an adjustment to slow the engine speed. BUT,,, are you reading the generator unloaded or without any thing plunged into it? Once you have the generator loaded with a device, the voltage should drop to a constant 240vac. 150 rpms should not make that big a difference on the voltage output, and if running under load the RPM's should drop also..

7 hp brigs engine on my generator runs two fast producing 127 volts. how do I slow it down?


Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Since you did not mention the make or model number of your generator I will respond in generic terms. If your generator is at 127 volts with NO load it is adjust at the very top end of the manufacturers limits. There is a 10% tolerance so 120 VAC + 12 is 127 VAC. Under an electrical load above 500 watts the generator should drop the output voltage slightly so your generator would still be within factory limits. Personally on any generator as a repair person; I set the output voltage at 126 VAC no load so that when the user puts the generator to work the output voltage is good. If your generator is running at 127 VAC under load then you can adjust the governor screw on the governor plate CCW about 1/2 turn to drop the voltage. Without a generator model number or engine number I can not tell you exactly where the governor plate is on your engine / generator. The screw will have a lock nut that you must loosen 1/4 turn then turn the adjustment screw CCW to drop the voltage. Just make sure to re-tighten the lock nut when the adjustments are complete. Mind you by decreasing the output voltage you also drop the output freqency at the same time you decrease the output voltage. It is better to have 125 -127 VAC under a no load condition as the more electrical load you add the more voltage drop you will notice. It is best to adjust the generator to 122.5 -123 VAC under a medium load. (50% of output capacity) A bread toaster is 1400 - 1600 watts and is a good load for a 3000 watt generator. Also a good hand held hair dryer will use around 1600 watts. If you use this type of load and the voltage output is 122.5 to 123 VAC I would not adjust anything. I have been working on generators since 1970 so this is nothing new for me. I hope that you understand everything I posted. I have a Coleman Vantage 3500 motor runs no generator output


This sound like a loss of residual magnetism in the generator. The field will need to be "flashed".This is also known as re-exciting the field of the generator.
The Coleman manual gives these steps:
1Use a 6 Volt lantern batters (dry cell) or a 12 Volt automotive battery.
2.Disconnect all loads from generator.
3. Remove the brush cover (that's the rectangular plastic cover on the end of the generator.)
4. Plug a lamp or light into the generator before starting the engine. The light will illuminlate when ?Voltage has returned.
5. Start the engine with no load connected to the generator.
6. Attach the "-" lead of the battery to the negative brush. Very briefly touch the "+" lead of the battery to the positive brush. Remove as soon as Voltage builds up.

Here is a simple test to check field and other wiring. With engine off apply 12v ac 1 amp to 110v outlet plug on generator. This will energize the field windings and should cause the armature to produce dc voltage at the brushes and produce a nice magnet. If there is a short in the field or broken wire or shorted capacitor there will be no dc reading at the brushes. . This test is the opposite of what actually occurs when the engine is running. That is the armature produces a magnet fed thru the windings, regulator and brushes. If dc voltage is present at the burshes, remove 12v ac and start engine to check for output. enjoy
