Question about Whirlpool Cabrio Washing Machines

Same problem. Glass lid failed within 15-18 months. I thought my wife had maybe "abused" the first one. We were very careful after replacing the first for about $180. The second glass lid only lasted another 17 months "being careful" opening and closing. I called Whirlpool customer service just to let them know I was not satisfied and that there is an obvious engineering defect. The manager said that you can read anything on the internet and they do NOT have a problem. I did let them know that I have been an Engineer for 32 years and that this is not an good or even adequate design for plastic construction. I guess she still did not believe me but I requested to have the issue elevated to upper management. It is a shame that Good companies will fail do to the lack of attention to the customer. I replaced the glass lid with a metal one as detailed above. Easy change over and it looks pretty good and a lot better than broken plastic. The washer is a little bit noisier now, but not bad.
Details on removing the plastic/glass lid. Open the lid. Remove (2) screws on each side of the lid at the hinge. Slide lid off. Pull out hinge inward toward tub (they just slide out). Keep plastic bushings. New lid installation. Install one hinge into lid. Just start but not tighten the (2) new screws. Put bushing on hinge outside the lid. Insert into washing machine. (Best to have a helper) Hold lid and insert other hinge into lid. Put other plastic bushing on hinge outside the lid and insert hinge into washing machine. Start the other (2) screws. Align and tighten. Good luck!

If all you want to do is to replace the lid, there are two TORX 15 screws on each side. Undo those and the lid should slide right off the pins. Be careful to not drop them into the tub or dispensers. You can then slide the new lid right on. Put the screws back on and test. If you lift the top cover off and mess with the springs, it is a PAIN to take off and put back on.

do you see about 2-4 inches down a crease that runs all the way around the top?
there are 2 clips in the front you need to push in with a putty knife and lift the whole top up.
if you where to look at the very left corner and go about 5-6 inches in you will find the clips.
can be a pain.
make sure when you do lift the whole top that you hold the lid or it will crash into something.
let me know if this helps

SOURCE: Whirlpool Cabrio Lid
The lock cannot be disabled, The lid removes easily and is also simple to replace.
Depending on where in the world you are depends on where you will get a lid, If you do a google search in your area for whirlpool spares you will get some results.

SOURCE: glass separating from lid
Replace with steel lid. Parts below but first I have to get my 2 cents in!
I bought the replacement glass lid and it broke within the first week. Terrible design! They are using double sided tape to hold the glass to the hinge. There is too much spring tension to be held with tape. Way to go whirlpool engineers. I'm just a welder with 1 year of school and I figured that out? Hmmmm?
Steel lid retro fit
Whirlpool will tell you it can't be done. However I did and it works and looks perfectly.
here's the parts you need
All from a WTW8200 series washer
Part prices from Sears. I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere if you look. I bought from sears to utilize the return policy while figuring out what parts to get. Thanks Sears! Give them the business if you can!!
1 pc 8572026 Steel lid $40.90
2 pcs 8563964 hinge $6.99 ea (hinge from the glass lid are different and the screw holes won't line up)
4 pcs W10119828 $3.99 ea (could probably get from the hardware store for half the cost.
buy a replacement glass lid from whirlpool and send them your broken original glass lid and get a refund for the one you just bought. Repeat as needed until they figure out they need to produce a quality product.
