Pilot goes out heater won't stay lit

So we are talking about the same won't stay lit I will describe both ways. One is when you lift your fingers off the knob it goes out that instant which is probably the thermocouple needs replaced,look to make sure the tip of the thermocouple is in the flame of the pilot light first. The secound version of it is it goes out in a few minutes up to a few hours.The second version is most common.There is a part called a Thermocouple that is mounted next to the pilot light, it is around 3/16 of a inch diameter 1 to 2 inches long and should be mounted so the tip is in the flame of the pilot light. This is what tells the gas valve the pilot light is burning. If any dust ,cat hair ,dog fur what have you gets around the base of the hole the gas from this pilot light comes out of it will bend the gas, which move the flame so it does not hit the thermocouple like it should, this is below the flame so what ever is in there diverting the flame dose not burn up.A draft from a fan or door could do it also.I have used a procom ventless heater as my only heat for 7 years and have to blow it out twice a year. I bought a new thermocouple at the same time I bought the heater to have in the closet in case it went bad some night, it is still hanging there .Because it sucks air in from the bottom past the flame and out the top everything in the air gets burnt into a fine ash dust. So if you use compressed air to blow out your unit you might want to hold a wet towel up in front of it hoping a lot of that white powder dust will stick to it instead of flying around the room . My flame always looks so much better ,less orange and more blue after this .

I have a Williams top vent gravity wall furnace (model 5009622) and I had the same problem. I had to take the cover off the furnace -- screw on top and two at the bottom (open the access door and there is one screw on each side) to get to the reset button for the vent safety shutoff system. On my furnace it's on the left side toward the top of the unit. I pressed the little red reset button and it's been working ever since. If your furnace is properly installed and doesn't have bird's nest in the chimney, it should work fine. Good luck!

Look for dust and lint. Look for them in places where gas should be freely flowing. I had a similar problem with an Empire Corcho wall-mounted propane ceramic catalyst heater. First it was the pilot light, then the #2 ceramic mantle. After horsing around with the gas lines and pressure regulators and trying to re-aim the pilot, it all turned out to be dust and lint in the gas passages. A little dust bunny in the brass pilot tube gave me a pilot light the shape and color of a banana. One puff of compressed air, and I got back my razor-sharp pilot. And some dust in the chimney of the #2 burner kept it burning blue/yellow and blistering paint off the upper surfaces of the heater. A bit of cleaning with a shop-vac put that right. "Passive" heaters are very much prone to this sort of problem because they rely on convection currents (i.e. LOW velocity) to get the job done. Convection currents are notorious dust collectors, as in COBWEB CITY.

There are basically three things that can go wrong with the Warm Morning .
Sensor shut off. There is a sensor button on the back of the unit with a wire going from it to the thermocouple. This sensor turns the heater off if the flue is blocked, however it will also shut the heater off if the wire contacts are dirty, or if the sensor has gone bad.
You can test this by bypassing the sensor. Disconnect the two wires from the sensor and reconnect them directly together. If the pilot stays on, your problem is here. Try cleaning the wire contacts first.
Pilot orifice. If the pilot flame is small and doesnt look healthy, the pilot orifice may need cleaning. The hole is very small and can get dirty. Disconnect the silver tube and clean with electrical parts cleaner. Never try to clean the hole with an object like a pin, you may damage it. You may have to slide out the burner unit to get at the silver tube. (Always shut off gas before disconnecting lines and after you reassemble, spray joints with soapywater and look for small bubbles which may indicate a gas leak. Dont use parts cleaner around an open flame.)
Thermocouple can go bad but this is not as common as the first two problems.

The thermocouple may be worn out.
The thermocouple may have come loose from the valve.
The ODS pilot may be clogged with dust or lint and may need to be cleaned with air(less than 30psi)
The valve or regulator may be faulty.
