my Buffalo external hard disc can be detected by laptop, but my access is denied. When i click on the hard disc icon, it popped out a message box prompting me to reformat my hard disc. Is there any other way to retrieve my files before reformat or
is there any other way to recover my files after reformat?
Is there any other way to troubleshoot my hard disc other than reformatting it?
Please help me, I am desperate to recover all my files because they are too important/precious to lose it.

I think I have the answer, plug your cable in. If windows 7 shows the message unknown device don't remove the usb. instead turn the switch on the back of the external hard drive off for a few seconds then back on. Windows 7 should then for some unknown reason find the correct drivers and your buffalo hard drive will now work. This worked on mine.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa

SOURCE: my buffalo external hard disk
it is a PNP (PlugNplay) device. Try using a different cable to connect to your pc. Should the problem remain, hook it up to a different computer and if it doesn't see the drive, it will be an electronic circuit failure inside the box. The data is still on the hhd but you will have to obtain a new circuit to bring the hhd back online for use.
