There is a message "Searching" on the phone, How do I get it back to working.

You might try to de-register the handset and re-register
it to the base. Be sure the handset's battery is well
charged, a weak battery can impede the registration.

( I ) To de-register the errant handset:

1. Press and hold the [END] and [ # ] keys at the same time until the screen displays
"System Reset, Deregister Handset"
2. press [select]
3. scroll to "Base Unavailable"
4. press [select]
5. display says "Not Registered"

( II ) To register the handset to the base:

1. open the base display's [menu]
2. scroll to "Register Accy."
3. press [select]
4. on the handset, press and hold [ # ] until
the handset display says "Registering"
5. In ~30 seconds, handset display will say
"Registration Complete" or
"Registration Failed".

This is described on page 22 of the manual.

HandsetS #2 and #3 work properly. Handset #1 has a display screen with correct datet and time -- but no dial tone, How can I fix this?

This sounds like Handset #1 has lost its "registration" with
the base. De-registering & re-registering is often easy.

First, be sure the handset battery is well charged as a
weak battery will interfere with the registration process.
Then try this ( 'works for the D1680, D1481, & similar):

To deregister the handset:

1. Press and hold the [END] and [ # ] keys at the same time,
after a few seconds the display will say
"System Reset, Deregister Handset"
press [SELECT]
scroll to "Base Unavailable"
press [SELECT] (chirps) press [END]
display reads "Place in base..."

Next, to re-register the handset:

2. Set the handset into the base cradle and wait,
within ~30 seconds the handset should display
a "Handset #" and be good to go.

Good luck!

Shirley, check if you inserted the chip properly. Usually the bars are your wifi strength. Most likely its the chip.

Tring to add a handset to a att 5840 base!

The process is called "Registering."

From another fixya post:

1. Make sure to charge the handset battery pack at least 12 hours.
2. Using the soft keys on the base located below the base screen, press MENU.
3. Use the up or down arrow keys to select DISPLAY BASE ID.
4. Press OK. The base screen will display the 15-digit Base ID
code for about 30 seconds, then the unit returns to the idle
screen. Write down the Base ID code on a piece of paper.
5. At the cordless handset, use the soft key to select NEW.
6. Enter the 15-digit Base ID code using the number keypad.
7. Use the soft key to select OK. The screen displays PLEASE
WAIT!.
8. After about 45 seconds, the screen displays FOUND BASE. If the handset displays BASE BUSY TRY LATER, the base is in
use.

My vtech cordless reads out of range or no power at base, what is wrong?

Official solution to this issue:

Make sure base station serial number matches all handsets serial numbers.

If they don't match you will have to de-register the units.

De-register the base station by holding the find handset button for 10 secs or until the In Use light illuminates, release the button and then tap it once more. You should hear a short beep followed by a longer beep.

Press Menu Select and the press the following without pause - *7890#
You should now see Test Base at the top of the screen press the Vol up button until Test Handset is present.
Press Menu/Select and you should see SW Version displayed. Press Vol up button until you see regstr clear, then press Menu Select and then Menu Select again.

At the handset remove the battery for 15 secs and then place the battery back into the handset. You should see 1. Place handset ... 2. press # on the handset screen. DO NOT FOLLOW THE ON SCREEN DIRECTIONS.

Next place the Handset on the base station and press the find handset button for 4 secs until the In Use light shows up. Remove the handset and press the # button.

Your handset should now display Handset 1. You can do all the other handsets the same way.

Hope this helps!

Blank Display

The display IC of your handset it faulty, sometimes it could be the LCD itself, but most of the time its the 25pin crystal IC. take it for a repair, tell them to try the lcd first, if that fails then its the display IC;s. BR

Voice Message Icon always displaying

The voice mail symbol is sent to your handset by the network when you get a voicemail, they then send the handset another message to remove the icon once you have listened to the voicemail... Sometimes an error occurs and the phone doesnt receive the removal message...

Try getting a friend or using another phone send yourself a voicemail, then using your phone, check your voicemails, listen to the one you have and delete it... The icon should go... However if its a hardware fault with the handset display then this will not fix it...

Handset not working

I had this exact problem. My solution was to clean the top of the condensor microphone. Something was spilled onto the phone and ran down into the hole that leads to the microphone. It not only affected the microphone, but made some of the buttons stick as well. The phone is not difficult to disassemble, just try not to touch the electronic components. If you are experienced in electronics, you may know that using a wrist strap( available at electronics supply stores or online) and grounding yourself will help protect the electronics. While you are at it, get some pure isoproply alcohol, and some cotton swabs, making sure that the swab is saturated with the alcohol. Just clean around the interior area of the phone where the condensor microphone is. You will want to even remove the black screen over the microphone to be sure everything is clean!!! Make sure the little hole that leads from the front of the phone to the microphone is clear and clean. I believe you will solve your problem.
