SOURCE: gateway M460E Wont power up

That typically indicates a powersuplly malfunction (not providing enough power) or, more likely, a motherboard issue.

The best way to rule out the first part, which is the easiest, is take it to a local repair shop or radioshack and see if you can borrow a power supply to test. Make sure it is the same voltage and similar amperage. This information can be found on either the bottom of the power supply brick or the bottom of the laptop itself. Something like "19V 4.3Ah" which means 19 volts DC at 4.3 amp-hours, or amps. Amps are not important at this stage just for quick testing. Using a power supply with too few amps could burn out the power supply exceptionally quick.

Most of the time you can get replacement motherboards on eBay for cheap. The down side to this is that laptop motherboard replacement is far from fun. From experience, I tend to avoid repairing laptops due to that fact. You could be exceptionally lucky and have a special, seperate, power board inside the laptop. This is not common and not likely. It is most likely connected directly to the motherboard.

If it is truely the motherboard and you found a cheap replacement, the cost of professional installation could warrant the cost of a new laptop. You could always compensate for the price of a new laptop by selling your current one "as-is" on eBay.

If you do dispose of your laptop, you can always pull the data off the hard drive. Easier than it sounds unless whatever caused the motherboard to fail caused the hard drive to fail as well. A simple 2.5" laptop hard drive to USB adapter can be found for mere dollars and allow you to plug your laptop hard drive in and copy the data off it. I carry a 30gb laptop hard drive in a usb encloser with me all the time.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: gateway laptop MX8734 Notebook will not power up

If it is plugged into the power cord, it will boot up. Radio Shack and Batteries Plus has good deals on batteries and carries most brands.

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, until they won't charge up at all.
Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. I suggest you get a quote first.

SOURCE: gateway mt6728 doesn't switch on and the red led

Sounds like it needs a new power source or motherboard. Since it is immediately turning off after the red lights then it's probably a hardware problem since there is no time for the software to do anything.

Gateway MT6728 PC Notebook Disassemble

Hello Don Dumas,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

To answer your question: This is a very time consuming process. The laptop will have to be taken completely apart, have the main board removed, and then the jack will have to be examined, finally the replacement part will have to be ordered and soldiered into place after removing the old jack. Let's not forget reassembly of the laptop again, and testing. This takes on average, 5 hours worth of work. I have done many of hey replacements.
I recommend you find a laptop repair center you trust and that will offer a fair price for the work. If you were in the Grand Canyon area, I would do the work.

Best wishes and good luck with your repair.

My MX8711 won't power up. The power light doesn't come on, it only flashes red 4 times and then nothing. What does the flashing red light indicate?

It could be realted to your faulty Battery.
Please remove the battery and connect the Power cable. Now switch on the laptop without battery (Make sure Power connector should be connected and switch ON).
Check whether its getting ON now or not.

Gateway M-6862 laptop will not turn on; battery light flashing re

Seems to be a problem of not enough power.

First check the voltage output of the charger(adapter) and match it with its specs.

Also try to reset the hardware using the following steps:

1 Disconnect battery and the charger
2 Let it sit for 1-2 minutes.
3 Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
4 Reconnect battery and charger and try to start by pressing the power button.

My gateway MT6728 laptop is not working at all, when I turn it on the screen kepts off, can't hear nothing (only a cooling fan) and basicaly can't do anything

The cooling fan spinning is a good sign. Your laptop might still be functional.

First, try taking the battery out. Then press the power button 10 times and on the 10th time hold it down for 10 seconds. This will purge any remaining power in the laptop.

Put the battery back in its place and attempt to turn the laptop on. Observe the behavior.

If the problem still exists, your video card might be malfunctioning or the inverter (monitor's power source) might have gone bad.

Try hooking up the laptop to an external monitor, if an image is displayed, it's most likely the inverter.

You can take the laptop to a repair shop to get it fixed.
