Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.

First thing to do is to try it on another computer to see if its not your windows playing with you.
If that doesn't work its either the USB controller inside your Hard drive box or the hard drive itself.
The only way to figure it out from there is to open the Hard drive case remove the Hard drive and either try it with another usb module that you know works or plug it right in the computer with IDE or Sata interface.

The Hard Drive could have come loose from the SATA or PATA connection, or your Hard Drive could have simply died. If it is still under warranty; replace it. If it is out of warranty; open the external casing and check that the HD is connected and / or test the HD in a separate external casing or Desktop that you have. If it is connected and the external casing is working properly (or Desktop is booting properly and can read it), then you have a dead Hard Drive and will have to buy a new one.

Have you tried connecting your external to some other computer or OS, will the same problem occur?
Well, in thiscase the MOST effective way is to try some so-called data recovery software to see if you can find some data back. Recommend you have a try of Wondershare Data Recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)
Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem! Remember - Always make Backups of your precious data!

test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions SATA
the leads from your (motherboard to your hard drive) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty
even something as small as an electrical extension or a faulty fan lead can cause you problems computer needs all of the data and power to travel through every working device and to have an end for a computer to be able work properly
a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive check all electrical extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd drives need to have current go through make sure these devices are working
check the CPU make sure it has thermal paste and dust free secure seating
also check your computer ram modules and cmos battery make sure they are dust free and securely seated some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in
hope it helps
