SOURCE: ENGINE OVER SPEEDS WHILE RUNNING

This is almost surely a problem with the governor, check it like this.
Have someone with a finger on the kill switch.
Watch the governor arm while starting the engine, if it does not move almost immediately after starting the engine it is broken.
This is not a simple repair as it involves taking the crankcase apart, you'll have to contact robin/subaru to get a parts list in order to get the right governor spool and weights.
For an experienced technician this is about a 2 hour repair task.

Hope this helped,
Carl

Check your air filter to make sure it is clean, especially if the gen. has been run in dirty, dusty conditions. Make sure the gas tank vent is not clogged.

Also, pour some combustion cleaner into the carb. through the air intake to clean the carb. It sounds like it is starving for gas.

Hope this helps.

How do I get a powermate 8hp brigs and Stratton generator to idle. I bought it and it wouldn't start. I cleaned the carb and it started on 1st pull, now it won't idle it run wide open all the time.

You have jet clogged, or still some obstruction in the carb. Hopefully you have a good inline filter .I'd take it back apart all the Jets and seats & Chem soak or a cheap complete rebuild.

1981 John Deere 1050 Diesel Tractor - Engine will go to high idle by itself. You can shut key off and engine will eventually die. What would cause the engine to high idle? Afraid engine will lock up.

There are 2 types of governors on diesels. one is controlled from the foot and is fixed speed at the foot setting. The other is variable speed which will run to high idle if the setting is not changed IE on start it will idle ok but if you use a fast setting on a hand throttle say to warm up the motor it will run to high idle. I suggest that if you have not had a problem before then you should have a diesel pump specialist look at it as there may be a fault in the governor control.

I HAVE A POWERMATE 5000 THAT SHUTS DOWN UNDER LARGE LOAD . I THINK I NEED AN IDLE CONTROL MODULE.THERE IS A 2 WIRE MODULE IN THE START CKT. #21009XA IS THIS IT AND WHERE DO I GET ONE .

Idle control comes into play when there is no power draw forcing the engine to idle with an electro magent. If you feel that the electro magnet is interfering with governor, temp remove the wire to the solenoid. Usually the idle control will not effect how the engine /gen output power. An overloaded condition will cause the engine the go the full throttle as the internal governor of the engine will try to maintain 3600 rpm. Overloaded condition will greatly shorten the life of the generator/engine. Try to use only about 80 % of rated power. Large motors can draw three times running amps. A compressor using 12 to 18 amps to run can draw over 40 amps to start.
If your generator could handle the load in the past, check the engine for loss of power, or the generator for faulty voltage regulator or capacitors out of range. Easy to check. Connect digital volt meter to plug /load and look at volt reading while running with no load and loaded. Voltage should stay between 110 to 120 under load and with no load (unless goes into idle mode). Good luck

My Blazer will idle rough on startup but is ok when the engine is speed up beyond idle.If I disconnect the MAP sensor the engine runs smoothly. Also once the engine has been run for a while,it will idle...

Lately there has been alot of questionable fuel going around, I'd start by running a good fuel system cleaner through it and change fuel filter. Another question for you... when was last tune up? plugs, wires, all fluids & filters? I would get the basics on a "ground zero playing field" before unplugging electrics to diagnose - that will usually have you chasing ghosts and throwing parts at an easy fix.

It runs wide open all the time im wondering where idler arm setting is at

It sounds like the govenor spring has become disconnected or the clamp on the governor shaft has become loose and allowed the linkage to get out of adjustment. If problem has occurred suddenly it could mean the governor gear assembly inside the engine has broken and means the engine will need to be dismantrel to replace the governor gear assembly.
Check throttle linkage to see if spring is attached at both ends, one end on the throttle linkage and the other at the fixed point on the engine or to the end of the speed control lever. With engine stopped the spring should hold the throttle wide open and hand pressure on the linkage shoud be all that is needed to move throttle shaft closed to the idle position with no binding in the movement of the linkage.
If spring is OK and while engine is running, linkage should be able to be be moved to bring engine back to idle. If porblem has occurred gradually, then linkage will need re-adjusting. Loosen adjusting clamp on governor shaft, then holding linkage in wide open throttle position rotate shaft as far as it will go in the opposite direction to that requred to close throttle to idle . Re-tighten clamp.

Motor is running eratic up and down under load

One of the most important parts of your engine is the engine governor. An improperly adjusted governor can shorten your engine's life. If engine speed is not controlled, the engine will destroy itself. Never run an engine over speed, especially without a load attached to it. Even for a short period of time it can cause catastrophic failures, like blowing the magneto magnet into 100's of little pieces. Over speeding is something that needs to be taken care of immediately, because it can be a real hazard with metal coming loose at high speed. This page will explain how to adjust the mechanical governor on Briggs and Stratton and Tecumseh Engines.
First, let's understand a little more about governors and why they may not be working right:
Most complaints about governors fall into two categories:
  1. Engine runs too fast or too slow.
  2. Engine surges or hunts.
You should do an inspection of the governor linkage and spring before trying to solve either of these problems. Make sure everything is operating freely and the spring is not damaged or stretched. Also, check the governor static adjustment to see that all free play has been removed between the spindle and carburetor. The best way to do this is to move the throttle from idle to full open and note the way the governor shaft moves. If it goes clockwise, then loosen the clamp screw and with the throttle wide open turn the shaft all the way clockwise and re-tighten the nut. Make sure the throttle moves from idle to full open freely after making the adjustment. Refer to the engine repair manual for exact adjustment procedures.
After you have made the above check, restart the engine and see if the governor now operates correctly. With the engine at idle, move the governor lever with your finger to open the throttle and it should push the arm back toward idle if working properly. One way to do this test is with the governor spring removed. If it still over speeds or has no push toward idle, you probably will need to have the internal parts checked inside the motor or recheck the static adjustmen

I have a briggs & stratton / Powermate portable generator; there is a lever with a black plastic handle on the end of it, right next to the 'choke - run' lever which has a red plastic tip on it. ...

The engine on your generator is also used for other applications some of which require an adjustable  throttle control. On a generator the engine must turn about 3600 rpm to obtain proper output of voltage and cycles. Upon further inspection of your throttle/governor you will probably find an adjustment consisting of a screw, nut or a tab on one end of the governor spring that can be reset for proper engine speed. (tab can be bent for more or less tension on spring) To check present governor setting, use a volt meter that has frequency setting. Make sure that generator is set to about 60 hz. (3600rpm) Good luck with your generator.

The mixer motor starts and stops, it will not continue running on any speed. By playing with the speed selector you can get it running sometimes but you cannot keep it running if you change speeds.

Here is how your speed control works:

Speed Control
The speed control of the mixer is attained through the use of a governor assembly mounted at the rear of the control plate assembly.
The electrical circuit is made and broken by the action of the fly ball governor revolving against the control plate.
When the switch lever is moved to an ON position, the position of the control plate with respect to the governor is changed by the action of the switch lever.
Thus, when the control plate is set close to the governor, a relatively low speed of the motor causes the governor to make or break the mixer’s electrical circuit through the control plate.
When the control plate is set farther away, a greater motor speed is required before the governor starts breaking the circuit.
The action of the governor is such that the speed of the motor will remain constant for a given setting of the control plate within certain loads.
After certain loads have been exceeded, the speed of the motor will drop to meet the torque requirements of the given load.
Speed is controlled by the governor and the control plate in conjunction with the phase control.

TRIAC RMS VOLTAGE
BOTH CONTACTS OPEN - 40 VOLTS
ONE CONTACT OPEN - 80 VOLTS
BOTH CONTACTS CLOSED - FULL VOLTAGE
NOTE: The triac regulates the power the motor sees depending on control board contacts.
A device called a triac is a part of the phase control circuit.
This device determines the amount of power the motor sees dependent upon the condition of the control board contacts.
If both contacts are open, about 40 volts RMS is applied to the motor and about 80 volts is applied when either contact is closed and the other is open.
When both contacts are closed, the triac is full on; consequently, full power is applied to the motor. In this way, the speed is controlled.
If the mixer motor begins to run too fast for a
particular speed setting, one or both contacts open, which cuts back on the voltage the motor sees, thus slowing it up.
If the motor operation becomes too slow, one or both contacts will close, applying the needed voltage to the motor to sufficiently increase motor speed.
This is always accomplished through the triac.
The control plate contacts control the triac, and in turn, controls the amount of power supplied to the motor.
