    Same here:

    Check Tray#1

    Reinstall tray.

This doesn't have anything to do with Linux printer drivers.

I tried replacing the POE (paper out sensor) to no avail. I Also purchased and downloaded the Brother repair manual for this printer. Unfortunately, while the logic for thr paper out condition should be simple, it is not documented in thier service manual. Even more unfortunate is the fact that the service manual suggests that you refill or replace the paper tray to solve the problem.

There are three sensors in the unit near the tray, of which one is identified as the POE sensor. I replaced this but it did not work. It's a realtivly simple photo sensor device operating on 5VDC that is contained in a fairly standard housing.

To get at the sensor, you need to remove the right side cover (two black screws at the bottom) . Next you open the rear cover and remove the two screws on the right side which hold the hinge in place. You need to disconnect the cable that commects the main unit with the rear cover assembly. There is a ***** on the left inside of the unit which holds a limit strap for the rear cover. disconnect this ***** and its bushing. becareful as it is under tension and likely to fly away. pull the rear cover directly out the back of the unit and slightly to the right side. There are two stubs that will snap closed under spring tension, so whatch your fingers.

Next there is a paper feed assembly on the rear of the unit. There are two silver screws holding it in place, they are recessed. The manual says to disassemble the feed/guide assembly to remove it but I did not have to.

The paper sensor assembly is on the lower right side as you face the rear of the printer unit, next to the paper feed wheel. there are tow recessed silver screws that need to be removed, and then it will slide straight out.

There are three sensors on the assembly. DIsconnect the three wire connectors (rembering which is which for reassembly) from the unit. The sensor on that was rear most on the assembly and the POE sensor are Idenitical and share the same part number. They just snap in.

To remove the POE (paper out/tray ) sensor , you also need to remove the small circuit board from the assembly by removing the two silver screws. Once that is out of the way you can unclip the sensor and replace it with a functioning one.

One irritating issue is that there are no idenitifying markings on either LED or what appears to be a photo transistor - which would have made troubleshooting far easier. Additionally, while various other printers have similar photosensors, the pinouts on the connectors are DIFFERENT, and cannot work without modification.

As I said in the beigining, I swapped an Identical sensor device (same part number) from elsewhere int he printer but the paper tray error is still showing.

This is not a driver issue because none of the standalone print functions or faxing functions work at this time.

Brother tech support says that installing the lower tray will not allow me to circumvent the problem but I am going to try it seeing as thier service manual has been fairly useless in troubleshooting this problem although very useful in the disassembly of the unit itself.

Anybody with any ideas would be welcome

Check the total page count in the menu. If it reads 288888, you have a defective engine board and it needs to be replaced. It is neither a driver issue nor a problem with the paper cartridge.

Brother will quote you a price in excess of $600 for a new engine board, but some authorized repair shops can get them for less than $200.

Re install tray will not clear

OK, we never found a battery locally, but we tried something else. WE removed the battery and left it out for several hours. Our thinking was we were trying to reset the memory somehow. Well, it worked. We put the same battery back in hours later and the check tray msg. went away. The printer still works fine almost 24 hours later.
