Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

Screen Failure I just dropped a fairly light folder onto my 6400, bending the screen all the way back and causing the screen to turn off. After checking for initial visible damage(none) I restarted it, but to no avail. A few of the lights flash on and off but the screen remains off. It's also not making any noise, but they could be due to me used to noisy sever rigs. The battery is fine as it was working before the folder fell on it and I have tried swapping it out. I have a feeling the folder caused the 'hibernate' switch to get damaged so the laptop is stuck in hibernation mode. I can't see a switch anywhere for this though, I'm not even sure it has it since I've never used it before.

Re: Screen Failure

Ok, first, don't just run off the battery. Plug it in to the ac adapter. Then hook up an external monitor and see if there's anything there. Try booting cold and pressing F2 to access bios. If there's an image on the external, you probly blew the inverter (easy fix, 35.00 part)
Let me know how that works out.
Good luck

Most likely a Motherboard failure, remove all RAM, Drives, and connected peripherals, if no change, replace the Motherboard

VERY Dim screen after a drop

Have you tested it with an external monitor?

I would say you either have a damaged inverter board or screen baclight lamp. Usually the inverter board fails in one of the following ways:

1. When you turn on the laptop, the screen lights up for a short period of time and then goes dark. You still can see an image but it is very dark, almost invisible and definitely not usable. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up and then goes dark again. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
2. Your laptop turns on but the screen remains dark all the time. You still can see a very dim image outline. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
3. The laptop screen works fine for hours or even days, but sometimes it goes very dark as it mentioned above. When you restart the laptop, the screen works fine again.

Inverter failure symptoms are very similar to backlight lamp failure symptoms and in most cases you cannot tell which one is causing the problem until you replace either the inverter board or the backlight lamp. From my personal experience, inverter boards fail more often than backlight lamps. If you have to guess, replace the inverter first.

The screen on our dell inspiron 6400 blacks out after being on for a while -- you can see a faint image on the screen but cannot lighten it enough to be useable. it also blacks out if the power supply...

This is typical of a back-light problem, especially when you view the LCD screen at a sharp angle and you see a dim Windows image. This fault is caused by either a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp.
The inverter supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp. the CCFL lamp is a mini fluro lamp which fails with age and use.
This LCD screen can be repaired, the cost of an inverter and CCFL lamp.

it sounds like your display backlight has gone bad. If your handy you can get a new display. If you are really good you can replace the back light.

Screen wont turn on , i have a inspiron 6400 .. I rang dell & my extra 3yr warranty ran out just 6 weeks ago & * They WONT HELP*

when you say screen will not turn on it means we do not have display right? now, try this. turn off laptop, press and hold D key then press power button, check if the LCD will display colors if yes then it might be your video card causes the problem which needs motherboard replacement. if no colors appear then LCD needs replacement.

Aspire 3000

Thats called the blue screen of death. Do you hear any clicking from the hard drive at all? Have you gotten it wet? Have you dropped it? This most likely is a result of hardware failure but can also be caused by malware. Do you have another computer with CD burning capability? You could burn a few hardware tests onto cds and test the memory and the hard drive. google memtest86 for a memory test and DFT or Drive Fitness Test for a hard drive test utility. These have to be booted to by the laptop.

My toshiba screen

Shine a torch light onto the screen. If you can see a faint outline of the images, it could indicate a back light failure. Unfortunately, you cannot fix this by yourself. You will need to take it for servicing.
