Question about Hoover Vacuums
The roller with the brushed is not turning. It will turn when i push the vaccuum because the brushes catch the carpet, but the vaccuum isn't turning the brushes to lift the dirt.

These motors have a fuse incorporated in the field winding and it sounds like that blew. These motors sometimes overheat at the front bearing and the bearing will melt into the plastic housing. This will cause the fuse to blow. It sounds like that's your problem. You can remove the motor by removing the three screws on the bottom of the powerhead and then check the front bearing for any bubbling or blistering in the plastic housing. The shaft of the motor should turn easily.

SOURCE: brush won't turn while sweeping
Does it smell like anythings burning if it's on for a while?
It could be that the belt is just stretched out and not keeping enough tension on the brush while its on the carpet. Once you tilt the vacuum up, there's no more friction, so it spins freely. I've had a few that did that.

It sounds like you need to replace the actuator arm or the cable to it. Look for Hoover part 43143046 for a start. I've got a similar problem.

It IS true that you can take the plastic cover off the top of the carpet head. But in addition to removing the two Phillips screws at the bottom, you have to manouver the wand release a bit. Loosen the screw and carefully pull the release back just as much as you need to, to remove the cover.
You will also need to pull manually release the four clips - two at the back and two on the sides - to pull the cover off.
However, I did all this and found that the plastic setting holding the roller canister in at one end had been burned out so that the roller didn't sit properly. Nothing I can do to fix it except order a replacement. The original problem was caused by getting carpet ends caught up in the roller. This caused the burning.
