SOURCE: samsung blue ray player loads dvd but goes to slideshow setting
We just figured this out. We had already tried to update the firmware through the blu-ray device itself directly from the website. For some reason, that was not successful. We had to download the latest firmware from the samsung site onto our computer and then burn it onto a CD. Then we used the CD to load into the blu-ray and updated it's firmware to handle some newer movies we had purchased. It now is able to play the problematic movies. The samsung site has instructions for doing this. Good luck.
SOURCE: will not play Blue Ray DVD
I had the same problem. Try this. Contact Sharp and have them email you the firmware update. You will need to download it from the email and transfer it to the player via a flash drive. See if that works. I am about to return my Sharp Blu Ray player to Costco and go back to DVD. There seem to be a lot of problems with the technology. Even when movies start to play, they have freezes and it is sometimes hard to get the menu to show up

It has the updating information in the operation manual. It's not on the sharp website. You need to call 1800 BE SHARP to get the updating stuff that you have to purchase from Sharp.
SOURCE: I downloaded the firmware update for my sharp
There are usually two reasons that this happens 1. is that the file needs to be extracted first to the root of the drive ie. not in any folders. 2. is that some of the older sharp products won't reckonize any usb memory larger than 1GB. As is the case with my 52' Sharp AQUOS Special Edition LC-52SE94u TV. Could not read a 2GB Kingston, but reads the 1GB Kingston just fine to update firmware. And Sharp doen't tell you this not even in the online how to firmware update page.
Hope this solver you problem,
Scott
