A block of ice growing on of the back wall inside a fridge can be removed by defrosting, but if it persistently grows back in the same position, it's the same problem that happened with my fridge. I was working for a domestic appliance service business in Wellington at the time. The industry term for this problem is "wet insulation". My then 20 year old fridge came into our workshop for repair. The foam insulation inside the back of the fridge was replaced, I don't know what else our workshop repair technician did. The repair fixed the problem.
