Can't get thread tension right on my Euro-Pro 7130

The thread underneath, coming from the bobbin, is too loose on the underside of the fabric. The seam looks fine from the top but when you turn the fabric over it looks like little dots of thread from the top with looser waves of thread from the bobbin.

According to the manual it looks like the top thread tension is too loose. I have it cranked as tight as it will go (9 on a scale of 0-9).

I've followed the instructions for adjusting both bobbin tension and regular tension in the manual, several times. It does seem to improve a bit when I make the top tension as tight as possible but I can't make it any tighter.

I've even tried making the bobbin tension tighter and looser than recommended in hopes that the top tension would sort itself out. No luck. Is there anything else that can affect tension on the machine?

The top seam is actually the bobbin thread. dots on the underside means that the top tension is too tight. you may have a piece of thread or something gummy caught between the upper tension disks.

What is the tension number for bobbin on a Empisal 800? It keeps on making a knot in thread under the fabric?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tgrAlQdX78
A: Looping on the underside, or back of the fabric, means the top tension is too loose compared to the bobbin tension, so the bobbin thread is pulling too much top thread underneath. By tightening the top tension, the loops will stop, but the added tension may cause breakage, especially with sensitive threads.

I have a brother PR1000 and on the test stitch there is too much bobbin thread showing underneath. do I adjust the tension in the top thread or the bobbin tension?

Yes Adjust to more tight see what it'll do.
Bottom bobby is too tight or upper thread control is too lose.

Good luck

How to setup tention

Set the tension dial to the midway point between high & low number. (This is the factory standard. )

Then test on pieces of scrap fabric from your project. The tension is correct when both upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. If the upper thread shows under the fabric, it is too loose. If the bobbin thread shows on the top of the fabric, the tension is too tight. You'll probably need to tweak the tension to get it where it should be. Tension is not static and depends greatly on the needle/thread/fabric you are using. User should get comfortable with adjusting it every time a new project is begun.

The stiching on my machine is real loose and catches on the underside of the fabric and bunches up, like the tension is real loose but it is set right can you help?

Check the bobbin tension and that the thread is tight around the bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin is in the right way around - the bobbin thread should double back on itself coming out of the bobbin holder.

I'm sewing a zig zag stitch and the underside is a perfect zig zag and the upper side looks like it should be the underside....how can I fix this so that the beautiful zig zag is on the top?

FIRST > Make sure your bobbin case is threaded correctly...

NEXT
For normal straight sewing the top tension should be around 5, for zigzag or satin stitch you need to lower your upper thread tension a bit. Try it at 4, if it still pulls your bottom thread to the top try it at 3 etc...

Tension problems

start with the bottom- should allow thread to pass freely with slight tension when dangled from the thread. Tiny screw on the bobbin case turned clockwise tightens tension. Next, check upper tension. Thread should pull through with foot down, with good tension. Stitch should 'lock inside the fabric(use two pieces of fabric and make a seam, thread from both top and bottom should be visible when you open the seam.

THREAD GET BUNCHED UP UNDERNEATH THE FABRIC, THE STICHES SEEM TO BE INCOMPLETE THE TOP LOOKS GOOD THAN I TURN IT OVER AND THE THEAD IS BUNCHED AND LONG LOOPS OF THREAD ARE LEFT. THANKS LOU

Hi Lou! This sounds like a tension problem--the tension on the top thread is too loose. Try using different color threads on the top and bobbin, then carefully rethread everything. Stitch a couple of inches and check the underside. If the top stitches look fine and the bottom ones are loose and loopy, and with the pressure foot down, tighten the tension. Move the knob or dial (whichever you have) just a little bit. Sew a couple of inches more, and recheck. Continue to sew and recheck, gradually tightening the tension, until you see little if any bobbin thread on the top or top thread on the underside of the fabric.

Let me know if this helps, ok?

The top thread is really loopy on the underside of the fabric, sometimes it misses a stitch, sometimes, the upper thread breaks, and it often gets so tangled underneath that the machine won't feed.

Your tension is way too loose on top or too tight on the bobbin. Try adjusting the top tension one number at a time until you get it right. (Only adjust the bobbin tension as a last resort). Also you could have different thickness of thread in the bobbin than on the top or are sewing a very heavy fabric. Try adjusting the tension with same thread in both bobbin and top and use a normal weight fabric until you find the right tension to get you back to a normal stitch before going to a heavier fabric or thread.
