This is a problem with that particular model of laptop.
It seems that the GPU chip (Graphics) overheats resulting in the solder points not making a good connection to the motherboard.
If your quite hardware savvy, you could strip her right down, take of the cooling unit and clean off all the old thermal compound and dust from the Heatsink, CPU and GPU. Then replace the thermal compound with better stuff (Arctic silver 5). This may solve the problem.
I had to do a bit more than this to get mine up and running though. If you need details just let me know.
Better still is if you know someone who's real good with a heatgun (aka Someone who's done this sorta thing on an XBox360) that can reflow the BGA joints on the chip for you. Sounds dangerous i know but if your lappy aint working theres not much else to lose.
Good luck, maddoc666.

shine a flashlight on the screen. if you see a faint image, its the backlight thats the problem and you will need to get a new one to fix that. But if you dont see a faint image you will need to hook it up to an external monitor( an monitor that is not made into the laptop) , and if you see an image on the monitor you will have to clear the CMOS.
and to do that you will need to take out the battery, the plug, and hold down the ON button for about 30-60 seconds. Well thats how you clear it on most laptops. But if it does'nt work on the external monitor you probally have a bad video chip and need to replace your old one.
