65-70 ft/lbs - see sequence below.

do it in 3 stages: 25 ft/lbs, then to 50. Wait 15 mins then do final tightening : 65-70 ft/lbs. Work your way from the middle bolts toward the outside in a opposing cross hatch pattern - see below for the sequence. This applies to unbolting the head (in reverse: ie work from 10 down to 1):

What is the head bolt torque sequence on a 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster 2.8 liter?

Its usually from the center out in the next most opposite bolt (star) sequence. ie. if its a 14 bolt head 1-7 top, 8-14 both from front it would be like 4-11-3-12-5-10-6-9-2-13-6-8-1-14-7. you just want to avoid tightening a bolt outside a non torqued bolt to prevent head or gasket damage. torque specs are done in degrees, ie 44 ft/lbs, then run it 15 min then tighten another 33 degrees, then run it another 10 minutes and final torque another 25 degrees.

One cylinder is low in my 1998 Volvo s90 and the repair shops says the engine needs to be replaced. Is this true>

Not necessarily. I assume you mean that the compression on one cylinder is low? This is generally either the rings/cylinder, or valves. Sometimes a blown headgasket can drop compression, but will generally have other symptoms, ie., blown between one cylinder and another, blown between the cylinder and a cooling or oil passage, etc.

A GOOD shop will check more than compression, to determine where the exact problem is.

*A head gasket blown between 2 cylinders will have low compression on bothe affected cylinders.
*A head gasket blown into an oil or cooling passage will blow bubbles (gasses) into the affected area.
*To check the rings/cylinder, after running the first compression check, put a few ounces of oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Re-run the compression check on that cylinder, and if the compression improves dramatically, you have bad rings on that cylinder.
*To check the valves, you need what is called a pressure differential guage. You place the affected cylinder at TDC (Top Dead Center) on the compression stroke. You then attach the guage, and apply a set amount of air pressure to the cylinder, usually about 100psi. One dial on the gauge reads input pressure (100psi), and the other reads how much the cylinder is actually holding. A drop of more than 10-15% generally indicates a bad valve in the head (as long as the prevoius checks came out OK). To determine which valve is bad, remove the intake ducting and listen for escaping air (Intake Valve) and listen at the tailpipe for the same (exhaust valve).

These are general procedures for tests so that you can see if your mechanic has actually performed them or not. If you want to run the tests yourself, I can give you more specific instructions.

Head Gasket - need to remove the head and check the head and block for cracks. Then replace the gasket and reinstall the head.
Bad Valve(s) - need to remove the head and have the bad valves reground or replaced by a machine shop and then reinstall the head.
Bad Rings/Cylinder - the engine will need to be removed and either machined and rebuilt or replaced.

Hello: Max cooling is when the recirculate door opens. With the recirculate door open, 80% of the air flow comes from inside of the car and 20% is outside air. That makes the cooling more efficient. Normal a/c operation is 100% of airflow comes from the outside. These settings have nothing to do with compressor operation. Also Decreasing or increasing the amount of cooling has nothing to do with compressor operation, what that does is control the amount of air going from the evaporator core either through or past the heater core. The a/c compressor runs the same amount of time regardless of settings on the control panel. Also in cool weather the compressor runs in the defrost mode to keep the windows from fogging up. None of these settings affect performance, the only time performance is affected is wide open throttle (WOT) in that mode the engine computer shuts off the compressor to allow max power of the engine, ie: passing gear.. When A/C is selected the compressor is on, none of the settings will affect gas mileage, ie, low/high, max/normal 60 degree or 90 degree.

If your watch is still within its warranty period, then try the makers' local dealer, as the warranty may be affected by do-it -yourself maintenance.

Adjustments should only be carried out by qualified technicians, especially on quality watches like yours. I would have thought that it was running outside the normal range of adjustment and might need serious attention by Cartier.

Error light flashing - head cold

Lost the internet explorer tool bar

Close any open Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser'

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly affects IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly affects Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its effect on IE and Windows Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first option doesn't work, delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relavent sub-key and right click where it says ITBarLayout and select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

You may want to right click on the main key (above) and select Export. This will allow you to backup the contents of the whole key, including subkeys.

HI. This white to gray smoke will be a strong indication of a rupture within the block seal(head gasket). Generally, when the head gasket ruptures, or shrinks, this will introduce coolant into the cylinder chambers, thus, inducing the burn - off affect. This issue will cause the discharge of the white to gray smoke you are noticing at this time.

The head gasket must be inspected, along with the intake manifold gasket for visible damage, ro leaks. The leaks may not be noticeable from the outside if the gaskets if the rupture is internal. Due to the fact that you do have discharge, this will confirm that the gasket has failed.

I would advise to perform this test. Kindly pull one spark plug away form the head, and crank the engine. You will need an assistant to observe the spark plug hole for coolant spillage. While you are cranking the engine, if the assistant notices that there is coolant spillage coming out of the hole during the cranking process, this will confirm that the head gasket has rupture. Another indication of gasket failure will be the rough idle. A rupture gasket will induce low compression, thus, affecting the combustion rate of the engine. You can confirm this by having the engine bock pressure tested.

NOTE_ IF your check engine light is on, have the codes pulled asap.
