Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Network Connections can't find my wireless network

I had to disconnect my WRT54G to vacuum and use a can of compressed gas to clean the fan in the cabinet. when i hooked everything back up my network connections says my laptop is not connected and there are no wireless networks available. I've had this router since 2009 and have never had a problem with it. It's a version 6 and there's no new firmware or driver that I can see on the Linksys site. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Pull the Linksy out of the console of your computer then re-install it. You may need to press and hold down your router for 30 seconds and then re-press.

SOURCE: compatibility between linksys WRT54G Router and Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Driver

from what you say, it sounds as if you have your wired and wireless card connected at the same time. This will confuse the router as it is trying to give two different ip addresses to the one pc, which it cannot do. If you are using the wireless adapter, make sure you dissable the wired adapter as the router will continually look for the wired ip address while allocating your wireless adapter causing instability. Next ensure you have a good clear signal from router to notebook as this can obviously cause problems. Lastly ensure that the wireless cards TCP/IP properties are set to obtain ip address automatically, especially if your router is DHCP enabled to allocate ip addresses automatically.

Temporarily connect to the router with a cable and reconfigure it to use a different wireless channel. While you're there, this is a good time to change your security mode - WEP is dangerously weak and you should switch to WPA unless you have a very good reason not to.

If all else fails, there's a reset switch (hidden inside a hole) on the back of the router.

SOURCE: How to configure Linksys WRT54G router with BSNL's C2110 modem?

The Linksys WRT54G broadband router is one of the most popular consumer routers there are. Linksys makes configuring your router easy. This article will walk you through the initial setup options for this particular model, but many of the basics we talk about here can be applied to any router setup. Setting up the router consists of four basic steps, such as Testing your Internet connection, connecting your hardware, setting up the connection and power cycling the entire network. Aside, from setup, we'll also describe some security concerns so you can make an educated decision on the administration of your home network.
Test Your Internet Connection First While this seems like something you would not need to be, make sure your Internet connection actually works. If you haven't already, plug the cable modem directly into the back of the computer and make sure you can get onto the internet. You may need to reboot the machine first.
Connect The Modem and Router to the PC Now that we have confirmed the Internet connection works, the next step is to connect the modem to the router and the router to the PC. The modem will attach to the router's Internet Port. You will then attach the router to the PC via any of the four Ethernet ports in the rear. Check the LED lights in the front of the router to confirm all of the connections are properly made. The Power, WLAN, Ethernet Port to PC and the Internet should all be lit.
Configure The Linksys WRT54G Settings With all connection made, you will now need to login to the router via your web browser. Type 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. You should see the login screen. Leave the username blank and type admin as the password and hit enter.
You will now need to configure the router's connection to the Internet. Under the Setup / Basic Setup section, make sure the router is setup to Automatic Configuration - DHCP. This allows the router to receive an IP address from your Internet Service Provider.
Next, go to the MAC Address Clone tab in the same area and enable Mac Address Cloning. This allows the router to clone your PCs MAC address, as the ISP may require this.
Power Cycle the Router and Modem Now that everything is configured, you'll want to power cycle everything. This is done to make sure everything has an IP address from the modem all the way through to the PC. To power cycle, shutdown everything. Unplug the modem and router power source. Shutdown the computer. Plug in the modem and wait for all green lights. Next, plug in the router and wait a few minutes until its lights are also green. Lastly, boot up the PC. You should have an Internet connection.
Change the Linksys WRT54G Router Password You noticed when setting up the router, that there was a default username of nothing and a password of "admin." Be sure to log back into the router once everything is running properly and type in a username and change the password. If you don't, a hacker that sees you have a WRT54G router could login to the router with the default credentials.

Reset password

Yes. If you change the password of the wireless network then other 2 units will get disconnected from wireless network (if they are connected to the wireless network. If these 2 units are wired to the router then it does not make any change)
I will suggest you to change the wireless network name also if you are changing the wireless network password.
Try to connect to the new wireless network on all the computers and devices.

Doesn't see wireless network im using the wireless usb plug wrt54g and i installed drivers for it. the icon on the starup won't turn green and connect. I doesn't see any networks and the green light...

First thing I would do would be to make sure that the wireless usb is enabled. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections and check to see if there is a 'Wireless Network Connection' icon. If there is make sure it set to enabled by right clicking and choosing enabled. If its not listed, unplug the usb and plug it into another port.

How do you install the wirleless router?

Hi,

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Network and Internet Connections.
3 Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click Network Connections.
4. Microsoft Windows XP displays your network adapters. Wireless network adapters are labeled Wireless Network Connection. If an adapter displays a red X, it is disconnected. If the Network Connections window is blank, your computer doesn't yet have a wired or wireless network adapter.

Good luck!
And Thanks.

You should disable the WAN miniport pppoe. SSID is the wireless network name or the signal's name coming from your wireless router.

After disabling the wan miniport, Right-click on Wireless Network Connection > View Available Wireless Network. If you see several networks listed, highlight your wireless network and click Connect. That should do it.
