Question about Hitachi TravelStar DK23EB Series DK23EB-40 40 GB Hard Drive

Hitachi DK23EB-40 HDD

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop that is 5 years old and out-of-warranty now. The hard drive that came with the system (Hitachi DK23EB-40) says "Primary Hard disk drive failure" now each time I start the computer up. The drive is probably toast, but I am not having any luck at all deciphering what the proper replacement would be in this laptop. I don't necessarily need a Hitachi brand, and I have all of the specs regarding the drive- but can I just merely purchase any 2.5" hard drive on today's market, or is the 2.5 setup different than the typical 3.5" that I am used to.
I figured out how to remove the drive from the laptop and disassemble from the bracket and all...I simply would like someone that is able to steer me in the correct direction as far as replacing the faulty drive. Any suggestions or thoughts regarding specific hard drive I should purchase to replace this one?

Re: Hitachi DK23EB-40 HDD

Basically what you have posted covers all that you need to know and do. The only issue would be the capacity in Gb of the new HD. Most currently available are far too big for your laptop. What you need to get is any 2.5" HD that is identical in size or just slightly bigger than what you used to have. Three reasons for this: 1) your motherboard may not recognize the newer/bigger HDs and therefore you would probably encounter problems even at the BIOS/CMOS stage; 2) the power requirement of the newer HDs may not be compatible with what your laptop can supply; and 3) the heat generated by newer HDs is considerably higher but your laptop was designed to accommodate older models only.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Hitachi Hard drive DK23EB not readable -please help

Have you put the hdd from the laptop into slave mode, its on the back of the hdd, there might be a "jumper" that you need to reposition, failing that only insert the 1 hdd from the laptop and make it the only hdd, it should have an operating system on to run as normal. You can see the <jumper> on the right of this picture, you will need to connect both teminals (slave) with a little plastic jumper.

No access

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery software called asoftech data recovery to recover your files.

Yes, all IDE 2.5-inch disk-drives use the same pin-out. SATA-interface disk-drives have quite-different interfaces than IDE drives, but all SATA devices share a common interface.

Depending on the operating system that you are running on your computer you should not need to install drivers for the second hard drive. However you may just need to assign a drive letter to the second drive. The links below will help you do this.

My hard drive which is model dk23eb-40 is not being recognized by my computer at all. not in the bios or nothing. is there something else i can do or is it gone completely

If you can try it in another computer, as the _only_ device connected to the "data" ribbon-cable, and it still fails to be detected, then it's gone, gone, gone.

Erased hard drive, now nothing will load

Check to make sure that your Inspiron is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive.

It sounds like your laptop is trying to boot from the (now erased) hard drive first, finds that it can't, then stops without ever checking the CD-ROM drive for boot media.

At startup, hit F2 to go into the BIOS settings. Look for the "Boot Order" section. Make sure that your CD drive is listed first, then your hard drive.

Save your changes, and reboot with the WinXP installation CD in your drive. Now your laptop should boot from the CD and begin installation.

Good Luck!

Backing up the Hard Drive

I take it your hard drive is IDE. Most enclosures only support 3,5" inch harddrives with either SATA or IDE interfaces. A notebook's HDD can have the IDE interface but it's way smaller than the standard.

There is an option however, it isn't necessarily an enclosure. You can look for the A.C. Ryan uDrive. It's a USB device which allows you to connect harddisks or optical drives from three different interfaces without the hassle of building in the drive in an enclosure.

If this is what you need, check this page:
[A.C. Ryan uDrive]

You'll need to connect your harddrive to the 2,5 inch drive connector on the device.

I hope this is what you were looking for.
