I want to change a plug socket, and know that I need to turn of the elictricity at the mains, and check the wires with a volt checker to check for live current. I bought a Rapitest digital mini electrical...

Yes you can use this instrument to measure. It needs to be put on the AC voltage and to be on the highest value. Voltage is measured with a fuse included (be careful). It is better to use a screwdriver tester to find a phase (hot wire). Wires are measured ohmic and should not be turned voltage on(or it may burn the instrument). If you measure current it can short circuit if the installation is under voltage (because of this reason the current is measured in series connection).

Electrical cables are all black & I need to find which is live &

ac, aka, alternating current, is the type found in your house. dc, aka, direct current, is the type found found in your car...or any other type of battery. If you have a total of three wires, one green, (ground) and the other two are black, then the two black wires are your alternating current wires. If this is the case, hook up your black wire from the fan and light to one of the black wires, and the whites, or commons, to the other black wire. In alternating current it does not matter which wire goes to where.
If there are 3 black wires, and a ground wire, then you will have to use your volt meter, and check the voltage from the wires, you should take three readings (wire a-b, wire b-c, and wire a-c) two readings will give you 120 volts and the third will give you 240 volts (approx) The two wires that give you 240 are your hot leads, and are probably controlled seperatly by wall switches. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Sounds as simple a fix as " The Fuse Has Blown "
Check the fuse in the plug, and it,s Rating.
I,d assume this should be rated at 13 AMPs.
If the fuse is 3-5 amps it,s under-rated.
You should get it tested out if your not electrical minded, you may have a short circuit. live/earth et.c.
hope this helps.
