Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Folders and files missing from My Documents

When I clicked on My Documents all of the files and folders such as My Pictures , My Videos ect were turned into 1kb shortcuts. I clicked on each one and they said unable to locate. I had all my stories and pictures there and now they are gone. I tried the show hidden files and folders and tried recent documents and system restore to no avail. How did this happen and how do I get them back? The last time the pc was used was in Aug of 2013. I tried to use it again 4 days ago. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Justyn Case, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Did you install any suspicious programs?

Have you tried searching the files or the folders they were in?
Which Windows version are you using( Please just confirm that it is Windows Xp Home Ed.)

Hi, assuming you use WIn XP, I suggest the following: Log in as Administrator, browse to this folder : c:\documents and settings\ , you will find folders, one of them is made according to your user name -- now open that, there you will find a "My documents" folder -- now dig that folder and you will get you files. If not that folder!! then , right click on the "c:\documents and settings\" folder - then properties and see the size, from the folder size you can guess your files are where. And the size is very low and your my documents folder was not mapped to any other external storage then manually search you files.
This problem happenz when user profile get corrupted.

Thanks

SOURCE: unable to activate show hidden folders

Hi,

Based on your description, the OS is infected with a virus. The virus controls this so as to prevent you from seeing "unknown", "unfamiliar" files/folders and thus itself. Th easiest is to run your antivirus and an online scanner, clean/delete said viruses from your system and their support files. Some other indicators are, Task Manager will not show, "msconfig" will run but auto close as well as what you posted, Folder Options will not engage.

Additionally, you could try to:

  • download, install and run RRT.exe to force the registry into removing these restrictions;
  • download, install and run AdAware.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Downloading using vista

Hello,
I've found a couple of solutions, some might not be exactly what your looking for. EDIT: Soultion #2 should be your answer...

Solution #1 - Change the Documents Folder Template
  1. Click the 'Start' pearl (button)
  2. Under your name and icon, you should see the 'Documents' option.
  3. Right click 'Documents' and then select properties.
  4. The window should pop up and read 'Documents Properties'
  5. Click the 'Customize' Tab
******* Soultion #2
  1. Go into your documents folder.
  2. Off to the left side you should see the 'folders' section
  3. Under 'Desktop' you should see the folder with the windows account username. Go into that folder.
  4. Under the the folder you should see all of the default Vista folders, EX: Contacts, Deskop, Documents, etc.
  5. You can right click each folder and select properties, then under the 'Location' tab you can select the location of all of the files, and such where you want them to be.
Hopefully this helps you out, my directions could have been a bit rough if you have any problems please reply to the post!

Deleting songs

Chances are that you are using windows xp. open up your sansa folder to where it says pictuer, movies, ect. look at the picture to see what to do. In your player folder click tools --> folder options --> View. Under hidden files and folders click 'show hidden files and folders, click ok. The music folder would now show up where the videos and pictures are. Simply open the music folder and delete the ones you do not want. By default the songs are sorted by artist --> album --> song.
