Magnavox converter box. How can I tell if the box is the problem or the TV? I have no picture, but it isn't the picture tube.

I assume that you are attempting to use the Magnavox converter box to convert digital TV signals received by your antenna system into analog signals for use on an older analog (non-digital) TV set. If that is the case then your first step at troubleshooting the problem should be to view the Magnavox installation instructions to ensure that the converter, antenna, and TV are all properly connected.

I can't operate my Philips Magnavox 42MF521D/37 Television

Philips has the FAQs and manuals for the 42MF52D/37 here: http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=42MF521D/37&mid=Link_FAQs&scy=US&slg=AEN . The direct link to the User's guide is http://download.m4c.magnavox.com/files/4/42mf521d_37/42mf521d_37_dfu_aen.pdf . You will need Adobe Reader of a similar program to read the manual.

Is there a specific problem you are having with your set? (OTA or cable setup or another issue) Please add a comment if you would like additional support. Note: digital OTA signals are subject to a "cliff effect" if your tuner doesn't get enough data from the antenna. This will be determined by the tuner, the antenna location (indoor, outdoor, elevation), distance from the transmitter, and any splitters or other wiring problems. I've seen failed amplified splitters turn into filters that block the incoming signal from reaching the TV.

Would like to record from my tv to my magnavox dvd/vcr combo box

If I understand your request right, You do not have cable or satellite box.
You can not record from your TV. You use the TV as a monitor from the dvd/vcr combo box. What the box receives is what shows on the TV. So you will have to have a digital convertor hooked to the (antenna in) dvd/vcr combo box, (antenna out to the tv antenna in) Depending on the antenna you are using that is on the other end of your cable-in coax connection this will hook to your antenna in on the digital convertor box. If your cable is hooked up and operating correctly and directly to the tv that is digital ready you probabbly have a good picture. When the vhf/uhf signal was transmitted you could go from the dvd/vcr to the tv with no problem. But now that the signal is digital and the tv is set for digital the dvd/vcr will not pass a digital signal to the tv. Best suggestion, you have to get a digital dvd/vcr receiver. Indoor antenna problem with Magnavox LCD TV Model 15MF605T/17

I have found most of these indoor antennae to be ineffective and a waste of money, however, I do not know anything about this particular antennae. I to have a Dish DTVpal, which I love! It's ugly and probably won't fit in your kitchen, but the best solution is to make your own "bow-tie" antennae, mount it indoors or on the roof and run a cable to the kitchen. Directions can be found on You-Tube. I live in SE Idaho (Pocatello) and can get 13 channels, most without having to adjust the antennae.

Switching from cable to antenna

Should be done with your remote. Go to menu and then setup. It should have a selection for cable or antenna.

Magnavox

You may need a stronger antenna or your neighbor may have only a VHF antenna and most of the digital channels are being broadcast over UHf. . First, though, check the antenna connection as if they are dirty, they may be lowering the signal strength (these are the connections at the antenna). Check antennaweb.com for the angel to put the tv antenna at to pick up the most channels. Internal antenna work very poorly. I have been having no problem with my outdoor UHF/VHF antenna, it picks up the same amount of channels in analog and digital.
