maybe it isn't a error message as it says check printer than flashs 6500. The alarm light and the power light are alturnately flashing. Could this mean something else.

Call Canon at 1 800 828 4040. I had the same error on mine. They are now shipping me a refurb unit at no cost, as well as a shipping label to return the old one.

I had to buy a different printer. I still have it here as back up in case someone knows how to fix it. I won't buy another Canon Printer. Too expensive to buy when it only works for 13 months. If I have to replace my printer every year than I am going with the cheaper brands. Sorry I can't help you!

Try http://www.canon.ca/english/index-customersupport.asp?pid=374 and look for your problem. I do not see a "6500" error listed.

How do I fix error code 6500 on my Canon Pixma?

You should have at the bottom of the print page a error code touch it and it will tell you what that code means and steps to correct it. It's either had a jam or out of ink or paper. If all else fails unplug and restart.

Hello! Welcome to FixYa
First try this to solve error 6500:

Firstly Reset the printer and
Turn the printer off with the Power button then disconnect the data cable from the printer.Unplug the printer's power cord for approximately 10 minutes, and then plug it back in. Turn the printer on. If this works you have solved the problem If this not works then try the next step:
After confirming that the printer is powered on,open the paper output tray and Open the top cover and wait until the print head moves to the center then Open the inner cover and check that ink tanks are properly seated.Press down on each ink tank until a click is heard.Close the inner cover and top cover. Also do you have any kind of data equipment like a camera connected, if so this could be causing the problem as well. Unplug it if so and see if there is still the problem after the above steps then final & best option is to take it back where you purchased it or contact Canon service center about the error code. They will surely solve it.

I hope this solution was helpful for you.
