It will not play Verbatim DVD-R disc that I burnt on my computer.

If it can read any other disk, you should burn your disk again because burning process was incorrect. your computer can't recognize the disk. In this case, probably you can't do anything, no way to try to read a bad disk if computer can't even "see" it.
By the way, you should test to read the disk on some other computer.
If happens with ALL your disks, your optical player is defective.
Again test reading with other computer if record was made correctly
As for your device, you should check if worth to repair and decide if repair or replace it.

If a read head burns out or the alignment has changed, the laser is inoperative. If a CD/DVD was a copy or reproduced on a computer it too may not be read. If the medium works on other devices, then the players laser may be defective.

The dvd player wont open and it isn't reading dvd's.

You will want to check in Device Manager to see if the device is even detected by the computer. Right Click My Computer, Properties, Click Hardware Tab and Device Manager. If it isn't recognizing the DVD drive then it is most likely bad.

Dvd drive wont recognize disc

There are a number of possibllities for this problem:

1. Your drive may be dirty. Try to get a drive cleaner, run it then try again

2. The disc itself is faulty. Try using it on another computer's drive and see if you can read it

3. It is a region-specific DVD. Some movies can only be played on DVD's made for that region. Although you can change your DVD's region to be able to read that DVD, you will then not be able to read DVD's for your current region. The recommendation here is to buy a multi-region DVD player. You do not need to get the top of the line model as these players can be quite cheap.

Portable dvd player

First clean the laser diode in the player. Next, are you using burned DVD's or legit ones? Players are not all built the same and neither are DVD's. The cheap DVD's have a cheap medium that a lot of players will not read. Some players will read just about anything you throw in them but quite a few are pretty picky. If you are burning DVD's, make sure they are compatible with your player. Some will play DVIX, MPEG4, others won't. I suggest you get one of those cheap "netbook" computers. Fill up an external hard drive with everything you can download and you will be in business. I think netbooks are going for around $400. They are small, screen size 7-9 inches, and would be the thing to get. They come with up to a 160Gb Hard drive too.

Reading a DVD.

Try finalizing the disc with your PC using Dr. Divx or another finalizing program, and see if it will work in your DVD player. If that fails, then the DVD was burned in a format that the Toshiba will not recognize.
