I was watching a video in my Dell XPS M1210 when it suddenly stopped and the screen when blank. I unplugged it and tried to switch on but I still get a blank screen but the power button has lights as well...

The inverter or backlight on the display may have gone out. Connect an external VGA monitor to the laptop. If it works, then the display has a bad inverter or the backlight CCFL lamp went out.

Tried to get rid of login screen - but it now demands a password!

BIOS passwords are removed by removing the CMOS battery temporarily from the motherboard. Windows passwords are reset with this CD: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/change-your-forgotten-windows-password-with-the-linux-system-rescue-cd/

My Dell xps m1210 has a blank screen when I turn it on. The hard disk spins (and works fine -- I pulled it out and hooked it up to another system), the indicator lights go on, and trying to send the video...

You said you hooked up your hard drive to another system, so I'm going to assume everything displayed properly and all that. You might not necessarily have a dead motherboard. It could very well be that your display is shot, which is $200+ to replace.

One way that might help you tell if its a motherboard problem or not is when you turn on the laptop if the hard drive indicator doesn't blink the way it normally does when it starts up, then it's probably a motherboard problem.

Hope I was of some help
